Nationalßepablicou URGKST CITI CIRCULATION Official Organ of the U. 8- Government. PRIDAY MORNING January 31. 1868 [Prom Putnam's Magasine for February. THE OUTCAST. liar sympathies are yours and mine, Her heart is full of human love, Her tastes, la spite of tinsel shine, Do her nature prove; Not less her pity is than ours, Nor are her Joys aa idle jest; Sharp are the thorns boneath the flowers She clasps unto her women’s breast. She earns icto her life of blame, Like us, In helplessness of grnee ; Unconsciously received her name, Unconsciously received her place ; Blessed with maternal care, or cursed With poverty’s neglect, she rose Through years' gradation, and rehearsed Her fitters allotted woes. It was not If she could or would ; She took her fate, like us, on trust; Hor follies are no natural mood, Nor does sho choose for jowels, dust; For had she chosen, well we know, Her life had been our counterpart, With more, perhaps, than we bestow In sympathies of mind and heart. The glances of her evil eyes On ns pass judgment nono tho less Than we, who talk in saintly guise, Condemning what we only guess. Where we discern a gulf between, She sees her simple line of chance, And hulda that we like her had been, But for the chain of circumstance. The stars that guard the lover’s talk Are not more chaste with holy light, Than when they guide her wayward walk Through the waste places of the night; And she and wo beneath their rays Reason the same, or reason not, And misinterpret others’ ways To make our own the happier lot. And which of us the Saints shall say She’s wholly wrong nor partly right; Or who, beneath that painted clay, Pronounce there is no blameless white ? Then cast not at her stones of pride, Low stooping from her height above ; But, moving humbly at her side, Lift up her life with saving love. Rail Road Schedules. Opinions of the Press. “Musical Festivals’’ several times postponed, compelling purchasers of tickets to wait months for tue distribution, has impaired public confidence n such affairs. The only fair system of distribu tion is the old and popular one of Sealed Tickets, stating the prize, which will be delivered immedi ately, on payment of the one dollar. That is the plan of H. BARTON & CO., at 599 Broadway, the most attractive place of the kind now in oper ation. They are doing the largest business, and deserve their success. You can not draw’ a SIOO,OOO farm there, but have tt reasonable chance for a good prize, as we know many that have been drawn, and the firm is reliable,— Morning Adver tiser, Oct. 25M, 1807. The New York Gift Company are distributing many valuable prizes. We have examined their manner of doing business and know them to be a fair dealing firm. Their plan is more satisfactory than "Presentation Festivals,” as they draw every ’day, and the subscriber need not pay for the prize drawn, unless suited— Gazelle, Oct. 24 th, 1867, The Gift establishment of 11. Barton & Cos., at .r.U Broadway, is daily attracting crowds of visi tors to witness the drawing process. The invest ment is lint 25 cents for the chance, nnd tho prize drawn, u satisfactory, is immediately delivered for olio dollar.
