THE SILENT PRAYER.
She prayed ; I watched her nightly
On hor knees bolide the bed.
And for n while each prayer-time
I heard the words she said.
And then there fell n silenoe
On her bowed head, and I thought
My senses had been sloeping
Since her words I bed not esught.
But duly as the night cento.
Come that silent prayer again;
I marked ber lips unmoring,
And I knew the mystery then.
Wei she praying for the living ?
Was she praying for the dead ?
There was no sobbing, sighing,
And not a tear was shed.
She was fragile in her beauty,
Asa leaf before the blast ;
Was she praying for sweet patience
Till the storm was overpast ’
Who shall tell us of her loving ?
Who shall tell us of her toars ?
She is gone from us forever,
In her incompleted tears.
Gone like snow from off the mountain,
Gone like mist from out the vale ;
In her golden hour of morning
She was swept before the gale.
She never told in dying
What had winged that silent prayer ;
But something we divined it
When we saw her look so fair.
Fair with lilies on her bosom,
Fair as lilies and os sweet;
Fair with slumber ou her forehead,
Fair with silence at her feet.
Ere the hand of death could reach hor
She had Sown to meet his kiss;
Ere another land could claim her,
She was far away from this.
She was far beyond our sunshine,
She was breathing other air,
Alone with her Creator,
In the shadow of a prayer.

Opinions of the Press.
“Musical Festivals’’ several times postponed,
compelling purchasers of tickets to wait mouths
for tne distribution, has impaired public confidence
n such affairs. The only fair system of distribu
tion is the old and popular one of Sealed Tickets,
stating the prize, which will be delivered immedi
ately, on payment of the one dollar. That is the
plan of H. BARTON & CO., at 592 Broadway,
the most attractive place of the kind now in oper
ation. They are doing the largest business, and
deserve their success. You can not draw a
SIOO,OOO farm there, but have a reasonable chance
for a good prize, as we know manv that have been
drawn, and the firm is reliable. —Morn in* Arh-er
tiser, Oct. 25 t/i, 1867.
The New York Gift Company are distributing
many valuable prizes. We have examined their
manner of doing business and know them to be a
fair dealing firm. Their plan is more satisfactory
than “Presentation Festivals,” as they draw every
day, and the subscriber need not pav for the prize
drawn, unless suited .—Gazette, Oct. 24/A, 1867.
The Gift establishment of II Barton Cos., at
oJ9 Broadway, is daily attracting crowds of visi
tors to witness the drawing process. The invest
ment is but 25 cents for the chance, and the prize
drawn, if satisfactory, is immediately delivered
dollar. A friend of ours, last week, drew
a SSOO prize, which he promptly received.—Trans
cript, Sept.'JfJth,, 1867.
