THE BEWITCHED TERRIER.
Sam Johnson was a called man,
Who lived down by the sea ;
He owed a rat tan terrier
That stood about one to three;
And the way that creatur chawed up rats
Was gorjos for to see.
One day the dog was slumberin'
Bohind the kitchen store,
When suddenly a wicked flea —
An ugly little core —
Commenced upon his faithful back
With many jumps to rore.
Then up arose that terrier
With frensy in bis eye,
And waitin’ only long enough
To make a touching cry,
Commenced to twist hisself around
Most wonderful spry.
But all in vain, his shape was such—
So awful short and fat—
Tbat though bo doubled up hisself—
And strained hisself at that,
His mouth was half an inch away
From where the varmint sat.
The dorg set up an awful howl,
And twisted like an eel,
Emitting cries of misory
At every nip he'd feel,
And tumblin’down, and jumpin’ up,
And turnin’ like a wheel.
But still that most owdneious flea
Kept up a constant chaw,
Just where he couldn’t bo scratched out
By any reach of paw,
And always half an inch beyond
His victim’s snapping jaw.
Sam Johnson heard the noise, and came
To save his aoimilo ;
But when he see the creatur spin—
A barkin’ all the while—
He dreaded hidorfobia,
And thon began to rile.
‘ The pup is mad enough,” says he,
And luggin’ in bis as,
He gave the rcchid terrier
A pair of awful cracks,
That stretched him out upon tho floor
As dead as carpet tacks.
MORAL.
Take warnin’ by this terrior,
h ow turned to sassidge meat;
And when mis'ortune’s flea stiall corns
Upon your back to eat,
Beware, or you may die becauso
You can’t make both ends meet.
The demand (or cheap shoes, says the
Lynn Reporter , has induced the most rigid
economy in the manufacture. The wagon
loads of odds and ends made in cutting, the
refuse of the splitting machines, are all
worked up again into that kiud of leather
known as “pancake,” made by pasting and
pressing together the scraps. This being
rolled and dried, is made to do servite in the
cheaper grades of shoes as inner sole leather
or as “ lifts ” for heels.

Value of reticence :
Silence in love betrays more woe
Than words though ne’er so witty ;
A beggar that is dumb, you know,

divers Eastern newspapers.

LAYING ON OF If A.NUN,

ANIMAL MAGNETIS M!
I PROFESSOR ROBERTS, LATE OF NEW
Orleans and Memphis, the great Magnetic
Healer, will treat all manner of Diseases and
Afflictions, not incurable, at tho AUGUSTA
HOTEL, Augusta, Ga., until May Ist, 1868.
By Animal Magnetism we claim that the dis
eased and deranged action of the nervous and
vaoular systems are restored to a perfect equilib
rium much more readily than by any other means
known to the medical world, either in the present
or the past ages. ‘ Nature must do the healing,’’
is the saying of every sensible and honest physi
cian, ana that “all we can do in case of sickness
is to aid Nature." This Prof. Roberts aims to do
by the great science of Animal Magnetism, and
that, too, without drugs 1 It is the only system of
the medication that las God as its authority and
example, or that can be sustained by science or
common sense.
Consultation free. Letters to be answered must
be accompanied with a stamp. For testimonials
see or send lor circular.
Prof. Roberts treats successfully the following
named diseases, together with many other forms
of human maladies not herein specified, viz:
All diseases of the Brain, Rheumatism, Nervous
Debility, Neuralgia, Weak Spiue, Curvature of
the Spine, Inflamed Sore Eyes, Paralysis, Weak
Eyes, Partial Bliudness, Dropsical Tumors.Ulcers,
Scrofula in its varied forms, Consumption, Dia
betes, Weakness of tho Limbs, Bronchitis, Loss of
Voice, Palpitation of the Heart, Diseases of the
Liver, Kidneys, and Bowels, Dyspepsia, Falling
of the Womb, Suppressed Menses. Catarrh, all
kinds of Sexnal Diseases, Impurities of the Blood,
etc., etc. Paralysis and Deafness are the most
uncertain of all diseases to cure, although patients
afflicted even with these terrible maladies will be
more or less benefilted, if not cured, by Magnetic
Treatment.

“ REGULAR” NORTHWESTER.
Augusts, Ga., March 12, 1868.
I hereby certify that I have been partially para
lyzed for tour years. Four months of that time I
was not able to make a step, or even so much as
move one of my toes on either foot, and was en
tirely destitute ot feeling in my legs.
I was examined by forty eight Confederate
Army Surgeons, all pronouncing me incurable—
having Curvature of the Spine, which produced
paralysis. I commenced taking treatment of Pro
i'essor Roberts, March 4th, 1868, and now, after
taking nine treatments, by Animal Magnetism, I
feel like a “new creature!” I cau now stand up,
and walk any desired distance , without crutches
or canes, which was utterly impossible for more
than four years before seeing Dr. Roberts.
For reputation and responsibility, I refer those
interested to Mr. W. A. Ramsey. Mr. Edward
Rodgers, Mr. John 51. Clark. Mr. Nicholas Young
blood. and Mr. John Houston, all of Augusta, Ga.
Mv address is Edgefield Courthouse. S. C.

Augusta, Ga., Feb. 29th. 1868.
This i3 to certify that I have been treated by
Prof. Roberts for a dropsical tumor iD the left side,
with which I have been afflicted for the last seven
years, and am confident that I am entirely cured,
not having experienced any of the unpleasant
symptoms whi"\ I did before the treatment, and
this by animal magnetism.

This certifies that I have been a great sufferer
with Rheumatism for five years, my left ankle
being much swollen, very stiff and painful. I
was treated twice only by Dr. Roberts, at the
Augusta Hotel, February 18th and 20th, 1868, and
now have not one symptom of Rheumatism or
pain in my body. All the medicine I iiad taken
seemed to make me worse, and I never had
any rc/ie/until I was treated magnetically. People
may laugh; hut I have no more rheumatic
pains—that’s so.
I work in the Augusta Hotel.

Atlanta, Ga., Feb. 12,1868.
I have been a hopeless invalid for the weary
space of ten or twelve years, laboring under a
combination of dreadful diseases tvhicliliave long
since been pronounced incurab, s. I had of late
grown rapidly worse, until three days since I was
brought to this city on a bed, being entirely unable
to sit up, for the purpose of consulting the far
famed Prof. Roberts. After the first treatment,
which was only a few minutes, I was free of all
pain and able to walk anywhere, aud to-day I feel
so well and strong I can scarcely realize that I
am the same being who was so feeble and suffer
ing so much three days since. I can never express
my heartfelt gratitude to the man whose wonder
ful skill lias thus relieved me of so much inexpres
sible suffering. May God bless the Doctor
wlierevei lie goes, is my humble prayer.

Atlanta, Ga., Feb. 5,1868.
To whom it may concern : This will certify that,
for eight months past I have been afflicted
with Neuralgia in the right side of the face, aud
most of tho time suffered most excruciating pain,
during which time 1 have sought relief in vain
from the regular medical profession ; and I further
certify that I was relieved the first time I was
treated by Prof. Robbrts, aud apparently perma
neatly cured after being treated the third time. I
most confidently recommend him to all similarly
afflicted. J. B. LANIER.

Dr. Jt. 11. Roberts . —This is to certify that I
have, for livo yeari (last, been afflicted with
goitre Physicians pronounced it incurable, aud
from them I obtained no relief, but upon the con
trary continued to grow worse, until treated by
yon four limes, by Animal Magnetism,in January
and February, 1868, since which time it has almost
disappeared, and I am entirely relieved from suf
feriug with it.
I am very kindly, yours, forever,

Atlanta, Ga., March 3d, 1868.
This certilies that I have suffered exceedingly
with a large tumor on the left side of my face for
twenty-five years. During this age of torture it
lias been removed twice by painful surgical opera
tions, which only seemed to aggravate its growth.
When Dr. Roberts came to Atlanta I took treat
meat by Animal Magnetism, and have been
greatly benefitted bv him —m point of truth, more
than by the entire twenty seven "regular" doctors
who have attended me.
Under the treatment, the tumor softened and re
duced in size, the hearing in my left ear has been
restored, ami my left arm, which was almost use
less, has been restored to its original strength. I
can now sleep on my left side—a thing I could not
do for many years before. 1 firmly believe if I
could continue the treatment the tumor would
entirely disappear. Mas. J. G. McLIN.
