The Constitution is too popular for them to attack, and the oppo sition is a mythical party, with scarce a leader and nary platform. (lev. Dr. Drcku llli. The New Orleans Picayune , of the 27tli, contains the following relative to this clergy man, who was yesterday consecrated as Bishop of the Dioctsa of Georgia: To Rev. Dr. Beckwith was presented Wednesday an anonymous communication which could not help being noticed, since, though very brief, it testified to the love and respect “of all Trinity,” and was accom panied by a most beautiful, rich and heavy silver tea service, upon which the words of this unsigned note are now being engraved. Dr. B. left yesterday at 3 p. m., by the Ponehurtrain train for Mobile, on his way to his new home (one for life) in Georgia. He will bo accompanied by some members of Ins vestry as far as Mobile. We say for life, as the canons of the American church have requited, since the transfer of Bishop Chase from Ohio to Illinois, that a Diocesan Bishop should never be transferred from one Diocese to another. That this eloquent and most untiring and energetic clergyman tnav have all of the love and respect in Georgia which not only “all Trinity,” but all of His own communion and all others who have come under the sound of his clarion voice and magical influence have accorded him, is all of human good that we could wish for him, since all things else will be added thereby. — The British in Abyssinia. We are now told that King Theodore aoutrary to anticipation, means to fight, and is by no means so weak as has been repre sented. It is stated that he is posted in a very strong position, between two rivers, near Lake lliak, with Magdala, the place of con finement of the English prisoners, two days’ march in his rear. The camp is situated in deep ravines, accessible cnly through moun tain passes, that offer fine opportunities for defense. The King lias fifteen t!.< u-- ml men and six pieces of artillery. Gci X •; r intends to head the flying col urn o x thousand men, which has by this time uni started for the attack of Magdala. But if King Theodore is as well prepared as has been represented, and maintains his defen sive attitude, carefully avoiding a pitched battle, the English people may have reason to deplore the result. Sickness and want of forage are terrible enemies for an expedi tion like that of General Napier’s to en counter. Our old friend, Dr. F. J. Having bejn.unanimously nominated for the office of Governor, by a Convention fully representing a large majority of the voters of the State, 1 do uot feel at liberty to disre gard thoir \yshes by refusiug to accept tbe great honor thus conferred. My only desire is to be of service to the whole people of our great State, with whom my lot has been so long and so pleasantly cast, in building up her waste places and in reviving her prostrated, industrial and com mercial system, under the benign influence of a civil government, in which all her citi zens may participate. To the consummation of this object my every effort shall be devoted. The Constitution adopted by tho late Con vention is before you. It was my privilege to aid in the formation of that instrument, and thus to become familiar with not only the letter of this fundamental law, hut also with the spirit and the intentions of those who framed|it. My votes are recorded upoii all its various branches, and it is therefore unnecessary for mb to enter into any state metit of my political principles, other than to say that 1 s'atid fully committed to the new Constitution, and have an earnest desire to vitalize those great measures—the “Relief’’and the “Homestead”—and thus enable our ruined people to take courage for the future, with a full assurance that the results of their labor shall be enjoyed by themselves and their families. It will be tho duty of the General Assem bly to provide a thorough system of educa tion for the State. If called by your votes to assume the exalted position of your Chief Executive, it will be niy duty, and no less a pleasure, to nominate to the Senate, for confirmation, persons whose past services, well established character and ability, have secured for them selves the confidence of their fellow citizens iu their respective districts, and whose fit ness, by reason of their known intelligence and moral worth, for the positions to which they may be recommended, will ensure their confirmation by the representatives of the people. “With malice toward none, with charity for all,” looking only to the glory, peace, and prosperity of our noble State, and tbe perpe tuity of free, civil government throughout the land, I have the honor to be your fellow citizen, R. WM. G. DICKSON, apu—lt It. S. Marshal as Messenger. Congressional. Washington, April I.— Senate.-—' The Senate went into Executive Session, to re move secrecy from the Executive documents, which the impeachment managers wauted. Resolutions from the Indiana Legislature were presented, urging as a National law eight hours for a day’s work. impeachment was resumed. Reporters were examined relative to the President’s St. Louis speech, and a copy admitted as evidence. Mr. Chew, Chief Cierk of the State De partment, was examined relative to the routine of commission change in form con forming to the Tenure Office Act. Proved. A letter from the President to the Secretary of the Treasury, advising him of Stanton’s removal, in conformity with the Tenure Office Act, was admitted. A correspond ence between the President, Adams, and Mr. Pickering, and Adam’s message to the Senate announcing Pickering’s suspension in 1800, were admitted. A motion was made for a recess. Butler requested a few minutes delay, but the Senate took the recess. On reassembling, Butler announced that they had closed the case with the exception of cumulative evidence. The defence asked an adjournment until Thursday to prepare and arrange evidence. Conness moved the Court adjourn to Wednesday. [Cries of "shame,” and “give them the other day.”J Mr. Johnson moved to amend by adjourn ing to Thursday. Carried, with but two negatives. The yeas and nays were demanded, but Conness accepted Johnson’s amendment, when a final vote was taken on adjournment to Thursday. Adopted, by 37 to 10. Tbe Senate immediately adjourned to Monday. Washington Items. Washington, April 4.—The House merely mot. and proceeded to the trial. Ihe Senate met at 11 o’clock, and the question of admission to lhe galleries was considered. The abolition of the ticket sys tem meets opposition. Conness said rebellion was as rife as ever in Washington, and that free admission was dangerous. The question was postponed, and the Court was then resumed. Nothing important occurred. Half a million dollars of Government security were destroyed this week. Revenue to day, $658,000 ; for the week, $5,858,000. The closing of the prosecution to day caused astonishment, but the defence was not surprised in any instance, and the public are disappointed. It seems admitted on all hands that Butler’s management of the case lias not strengthened impeachment. Some claim that Butler gave undue importance to his own article—the tenth. Others insinuate that Butler is playing false, and that he intentionally made the proceedings farcical. It seems certain that the defence will hurry the case to a conclusion. Cablegrams. London, April 4.—D’lsraeli moved an adjournment of the House to the 20th inst., if the Liberals should carry tho Irish Church question. Adopted. A division then occurred on Stanley’s motion to postpone the Church question to tlie next session. Six hundred members voted The Government, was defeated by sixty majority. Gladstone’s resolutions was then adopted by fifty six majority. The Prince and Princess of Wales re mained in the Royal gallery during the debate, which concluded at three o’clock this morning. The defeat of the Ministry forms the chief topic of conversation. All the jour nals contain articles. The Times says the House of Commons resolved that tliis cancer of the Empire shall be removed. This morning’s vote is the dawn of a ru unitid Empire. The wrongs of ages are to be ended, and right done amid the acclama* lon of the nation. This much guarantees peace. Berlin.
