LAIfIEST COT CIRCULATION
Official Organ of the U. 8-Government.
TUKSDVY MORNING April 14, 166*
MRS. JUDGE JENKINS.
thb om.T naans* sitvii'Kt To “mm wl'l.i.*:n.”
Maud Mailer all that rummer <l«v
Halted the meadow iweet with hey ;
Yet, looking down the distant lane,
She hoped the Judge would cuiuo again ;
But when he eame, with einilee end bow,
Maud only bluahed and etamaered “Ha-ow V
And epoke of her “pa,” and wondered whether
He’d giro conrent they should wed together.
Old Muller burst in tears, and then
Begged that the Judge would lend him “ten
Far trade was dull and wagos low,
And the “craps” this year somewhat slow.
And ere the languid summer died,
Sweet Maud became the Judge’s bride.
But on tho day that thoy were mated,
Maud's brother, Bob, was intoxicated ;
And Maud's relations, twelve in nil,
Were very drunk at the Judge's hall.
And when the summer came again
The young bride bore him babies twain.
And the Judge was blest —but thought it strange
That bearing children made such a change;
For Maud grew broaJ, and red, and stout,
And the waist that his arm onco olasped about
Was more than he could span ; and he
Sighed as he pondored ruefully,
How that which in Maud was native grace,
In Mrs. Jenkins was out of place.
And thought of the twins, and wished that they
Look less like the man who raked the hay
On Muller's farm, and dreamed with pain
Os the day he wandered down the lane.
And looking down that dreamy track
11c half regrettod that he came back ;
For, had he waited, he might have wed
Some maiden fair and thorough bred.
For there be women fair as she
Whose verbs and nouns do more agree.
Alas for maiden I alas for Judge!
For the sentimental—that’s one half “fudge."
For Maud soon thought the Judge a boro,
With all his learning and all his loro;
And the Judge would havo bartered Maud’s fair
faco
For moro refinement and social grace.
If, of all words of tongue and pen,
Tho saddest are, “It might havo been ;”
Moro sad are thoso we daily see,
“It is, but hadn’t ought to be.”
The New York World says the Con
necticut election has smashed the Grant
machine. Judging by the shape of tho new
Legislature, which will secure tho Republi
cans anew U. S. Senator after the 4th of
March, 18G9, lion. James Dixon will hardly
agree with tho Copperhead luminary.—
