The Macon Telegraph says, in relation to
the election in Monroe ceunty,. “We are
still without our official report from this
county, though tre learn from good authority
that, after counting all the illegal votes, the
Democrats have carried the county.'
Three Elements of Democratic Elec
tioneering.
In the first place, there is pistols and
other fire arms; next, is so-called preaching
in the pulpit, and endeavors to enlarge the
subscription list ot the LaCrosse Democrat

obscene exponent of modern Democracy,
by the members of the cloth ; and last, but
not least, whiskey, and its various named

Fillmore No. 4.
This company was out yesterday morning
near the fountain, giving their steamer a
final trial. On the trial on Saturday she
threw water six minutes after the lire was
kindled, and with 40 pounds of steam.
Yesterday the “raercheen” was worked by
Mr. M. R. Clapp, of the firm of Clapp &
Jones, builders, assisted by Mr. W. Haley,
the engineer of the company. The first
trial was drawing water from the plug,
throwing through 50 feet of hose, with
1$ inch nozzle. The distance reached was
236 feet 11 inches ; the steam power varying
from 130 to 135 pounds.
The next trial was from the cistern, the
engine drawing her own water, one trial;
a solid stream of 252 feet 3 inches was
thrown; steam varying from 90 to 140
pounds. It will be remembered that the
ruarantee of this engine was only 220 feet-
The distance thrown exceeds anything
that has ever been done in this city, play ing
from the cistern, and the hoys of the
1 igilant ’ and the ‘'Clinch” will have to
look to their laurels at the October parade.
The city authorities have accepted the
ragine, and the necessary papers were
signed yesterday.

the name of the engine as it was when

Washington Items,
Washington, April 29.—1n the House to
day, a resolution was offered to print five
hundred copit* of the Southern Constitutions.
Sumner moved a resolution censuring
Nelson for using language likely to provoke
a duel. Several objections made.
Nelson produced a letter, dated the 9th of
March, with Butler’s and Logan’s signatures,
regarding alta vela.
Butler desired to sec the letter.'
Nelson desired some pledge that it would
bo returned.
Chase made some objection, when Nelson
said he would prefer depositing them with
the Secretary of the Senate, who could show
it to Butler.
Here the matter stopped.
Evarts proceeded.
Meade telegraphs Grant that Georgia
ratifies the Constitution and elects Bullock,
but the Legislature will he Democratic.
Stanberry will deliver his speech in person.
Evarts spoke all day, and will conclude to
morrow.
Acquittal stock up. Bets even to day.
that Nelson be allowed
to explain. Nelson, as part of the explana
tion, was reading a letter.
Butler objected.
Senator Davis said that a Manager had no
business to object.
Senator Sherman then objected.
Hendricks moved that Nelson he allowed
to read so much as would show date and
signature. Carried.
Nelson, holding the letter, faced toward
the Senate, and said : “The Senators will
see the letter is dated March Dili, and here
attached to it they will see the autographs
of B. F. Butler and John A. Logan.”
The leadership which Sumner has as
sumed regarding new rules, is evidently
distasteful to several Senators.
Canby telegraphs Grant that the majority
in North Carolina, so far, is 13,000 Thirty
six counties unreported.
It has transpired in the Court of Claims
that there are many depositions in cotton
cases not properly read to witnesses, but ex
tended hereby the Commissioner front phono
graphic notes. Thu Court ordered new de
positions, causing delay and disappointment
in many cases.
The Reconstruction Committee met to
day, and considered South Carolina and
Arkansas Constitutions. They came to no
conclusions, and will meet again Saturday.
