Clift’s majorities in twenty three counties, First Congressional District, over tho great cwpet bagger, Fitch, amount to 4460 votes— the rote standing t Cliit, 5b97 ; Fitch, 10.1, Political Equality. A Democratic Club has been formed at Milledgeville, and among the five Vice Presi dents appear the names of two colored meu. We can not see how the Democrats can consistently object to negroes bolding office wheu they themselves make Vice Presidents of them. That “New" Bell, Well, our ears were pleasantly greeted, last evening, by our friend Charlie’s uew “auction bell." It was snch an improve ment upon that other bell, wc cannot refrain from noticing the vast improvement; and we have no doubt that that well known voice, “going, going, gono,” will be more liquid in its tones, under the inspiration of the' new’’ bell. Pic Nic of C iliam No. 8. The annual picnic of “Citizen” No. 8 came off yesterday, at the suburban retreat, Berzelia. An extra train of four coaches left Union Depot at 7:15 A. M., and was filled with the gallant members of No. 8, their wires, sweethearts and joyous little ones. Flowers gay decked the wayfarers, and enjoyment crowned the happy day. Pleasure Jaunt to Savannah. Our gallant Firemen of “Georgia” and “Vigilant” No. 3, left on yesterday morning at 9 o’clock for Savannah upon a return visit to the firemen of that city, and we hope that they will have a pleasant trip, win all the prizes, and have a safe return home, for the “boys” know well how to put out fires—and put down comestibles, etc. “SnmmcrTillc Garden.” Reference is made to the advertisement of this now resort for the citizens of the city of Augusta, at the end of the City Railroad, at Summerville, which is now open ; and will give on to morrow a Barbecue of the old sort, where creature comforts of “solid or liquid form can be had of the best sort, no doubt. A Convention of Kuilrontl Vlacnalci. be understand a Convention of the prin cipal officials of all the Railroads south of Philadelphia and east of the Mississippi fiver, is to be held in this city to day, for the purpose of arranging a through schedule for passengers and freight, which will greatly facilitate and expedite communication. It is to be hoped their deliberations will result in much beuefit to the commercial and trav elling community. County Court. This Court—Judge McLaws presiding— tvas in session nearly all day yesterday—and determined the cases which will be found Mow, to wit: State vs. Isaac Jefferson for Hiot. It seems this was a ease of Riot which occured Spaeth's in September last, between a Party of negroes and a United State soldier, stationed here. One of the two parties found to be most implicated was named Robert Johnson, who was tried at December Term and convicted. The present tried efondant was sick, and has had his trial postponed until yesterday, when he too, was found guilty and sentenced to six months °o the public works. State vs. James Luke, for simple Lar ceny James has two ol the Apostles names, »“d should have been a better Christian, but foil from grace and laid violent hands u pon his neighbor’s wood-pile, and appro priated at various times sundry armfulls of " sa wood. Upon these facts being proved on the said “James” he was found eiihy o( simple larceny—and will be '•ntenced, together with all the other persons lund guilty, at this term of the Court—on ■ aturday (tomorrow) at 10 o'clock a. m. nar.au. e had the pleasure of an introduction, Jtsterday, to Mr. S. A lady by tha name of Mrs. Sarah McCul loch carried her blind husband to the (tolls in Atlanta, on Monday, so that he might voto the full Democratic ticket. «** —— Cor. It. It. Mullock. This distinguished gentleman is a guest at the National Hotel, in Atlanta. Ho received a very large number of calls yesterdny from gentlemen ol both parlies, says the Am. Tha Governor elect received nil who called on him with an elegance and case of manner altogether becoiniog one who is to preside over the destinies of Georgiu, as her Chief Magistrate, tor years to come. While the Governor is sufficiently communicative to be agreeable, he is by no means talkative as to the future. It is secretly hinted that quite a number were no wiser when they came out than when they went in. Our little news bird says lie talks pleasantly and not unin terestingly upon the state ot the weather. Henry Clay possessed the same faculty to an astonishing degree. Very Hard Hit. In an article elsewhere, headed “The Contest in Georgia,” the Tiibune uses the following language : “Had General Gordon been elected, he would have proved a better Unionist than any of the “bomb-proofs’’ who kept very carefully out of the ranks in the late struggle, but are now so vociferous for a chance to fight in the next one.” How many there are, right here in Augusta, who, during tho late War, were intense Unionists, and kept out of the army, by all sorts of dodges, whether attached to Soldier’s Relief Associations, contractors afflicted with rheumatism, shortsightedness, deafness, and a thousand and one other lame excuses, at the late election voted the Democratic Ticket! The question naturally arises—if all these newly-fledged Democrats are trying now to keep the State out of the Union, why they did not volunteer in the armies of the South, and try to fight their way out of the United States, in place of sneaking round the country during the War? For a man who fought lor his principles we have a high regard. The stay-at-home Democrat ought to be ashamed of himself. Hoi for I.lberia. Sixty one colored men, women and chil dren—with baggage, agricultural tools, and household goods—left yesterday morning, at 9 a. in., for Liberia via Savannah. They hail from near Aiken, Edgefield District, South Caroliua, and seemed to have been quite intelligent and well satisfied at the new move they are making. They seemed, also, to be well supplied with an outfit; and while they seek the “land of their fathers”—not their “native land,” as Democracy so calls Africa—they had no fears, and seemed hope ful of health and prosperity. It is to be hoped they will have both of these. Some few of the more careful and energetic, no doubt, will succeed ; hut the past history of emigration to Africa does not warrant the belief that a majority will ever do so. Cli mactic fevers and uneducated carefulness, together with an enervation produced by the climate, even to the healthy, will pre vent successful adventure, in the Torrid Zone, to those persons born in a more temperate clime. Being free agents, how ever, and enjoying the right of domicil where they may choose it, while we can not see any great benefit to arise oithur to the emigrant or to the country he leaves, by decimating its laborers, as is the case with every laborer now being driven away, from any cause, from the South, we have no desire to dictate in the matter at all. For we believe that in religion—in politics—in emigration—and in every business of life— a man’s belief is his own an I no one clsc’s property, aud that he has the inherent, God-given right to enjoy it as he may see fit, without let or hindrance—and his con science and his God are the only arbiters. A Carpel-bagger for A. B.Senator. The Macon Journal «.(.’• Messenger nomi nates H. S. Fitch, recently beaten by Dr. Clift for Congress, in the First Congres sional District, as a candidate for United States Senator from Georgia, on the ground that he has “been rejected by the brutal negroes and loathsome scalawags.” This is rather a brazen nomination, to propose that a man whom the negroes and scalawags thought unfit to represent the whole people of Georgia. The antipathy of the Democ racy for carpet-baggers seems to he dimin ishing, just as their dread of negro suf frage and negro supremacy has wonderfully declined sinee they found that they intimi dated and bribed some negroes into voting their ticket.
