The A**oCi«tail Preaa Agent

the readers of our paper are not at all in

Complaints.
We have daily complaints from our city
subscribers, that borrowers and stealers are
plenty, and they can hardly get a sight of
our paper in consequence. Now, all we
have to say is that it is much more business
like to take and pay for a paper even if it
don't suit you in politics or religion, than to
borrow or 3- 1 another persons paper—
don't rou think so.
County Court.
We omitted, iu our County Court report
to include the name of State vs. Bob Jobn
son, who was charged with burglary, and
committed to jail for trial; and yesterday,
Judge McLaws sent Tom Capers to the
tame place, charged with committing larceny
from the house, and that ended the chapter
of both the Courts.

On yesterday, in company with M. >S.

mond, Columbia, Lincoln, and Wilkes coun
'i Mr. ,1. K. W ner, the Superintendent

Superintendent now, we believe, of all the
Schools in the city, we visited a large num

md we regret exceedingly that time would
tot allow our party to visit, all the schools
of the city.
There are eighteen public schools in this

to be returned iu his embodied "Report to
the Hoard of Public Kducation,’’ for the
county of Richmond and city of Augusta.
Superintendent Calvin, in his interest in
education, seems to ns to he wrapped up
completely, and docs not know such a word
as fail ; but day and night his mind is active
iu the discharge of his various duties, and in
leaving nothing undone that will elevate the
standard of education, and advance the
interest, not only of the white schools, but
of the colored schools—he, not knowing
“any variation or shadow of turning" from
bis duties to the one or to the other. This
is as it should be. The children ol this State
—of this whole country, are sadly neglected
as to education ; but the fact is patent to
every observant tnan or woman, and while
there is, we hope, anew era dawning upon
our people, there is yet much work to do by
nil friends of the cause of education. Super
intendent Calvin is in favor of the introduc
tion ol vocal music in all the public schools,
and will, as soon ns practicable, introduce
vocal music in his own school—the Augusta
Free School—over which he and the accom
plished Mrs. Jones are jointly Superintend
ents.
Mr. Superintendent Warner, of the Colored
Mission School established, made a report to
us, on the 3d of April, as follows :
"The American Missonary Association,
whose Headquarters are at 63 John street,
New York, has under it-i care ome 900
pupils in the city of Augusta.
“Twenty two thousand dollars has beeu
spent iu the schools, and a large amount for
food and clothing, and rent in supplying
immediate necessities of the poor. * *
“This Society has 111 Teachers and Mis
sionaries in Georgia,” etc., etc.
We visited all these schools yesterday, and
it aflords ns extreme pleasure to say that we
were never more gratified in our life at the
admirable conduct of the schools, and the
astonishing aptitude of the colored children
present, to say nothing of the few adults
who attend (by snatching a few hours from
the cares of life), to endeavor to improve
their minds. We found that the colored
schools used the “National Series of Text
Books,’ and the white schools the "American*
Senes of Text Books.’’
Vocal music has been introduced into all
the colored schools, and is a success so far,
for we found the children enjoyed the exer
cise very much. We intended to individual
ize some of the most promising, but find
our notice extended already too far. We
shall, therefore, reserve for another article
and another day what wo may have to snv
in regard to the school houses, etc., and
shall endeavor to call the attention of the
people to the great need of enlarged school
houses for the white children, greater ventila
tion and better appointments-and fixtures.
AUGUSTA MARKETS.
Monday, May 1 -l’.
FINANCIAL.—Wo have no transaction; to
note, or any change In the Hold or Bond inarkc'.
Quiet seems to pervade this branch, as it does ail
others of trade.
COTTON.—The market is very tluliand quiet,
and although there has been a slight decline in
Liverpool, it does not seem to have affected our
homo markets, probably from the well known
fact that the supply of Cotton now on hand iu
this country,|it is betiored, is too small to supply
full time work in our own manufactories. We
quote New York Middlings at :slle.
CORN—Remains like the -irk mini whoso re.
iterated reply vvas “About, ns usual cl.lß per
ear load, and $1,25 at rotail from stores.
BACON.—Prices maintained at about 17c
clear sides; hams 18 to 26c. aecordiug to qnali
ty. Other meats rang ng, as to quantity and
quality, anywhere inside of these figures.
Trade docs not appear overly lively, but the
retailers do a "leetlo” business, of course, till th"
time."

Washington Items.
Washington, April 3. Bingham will
occupy two, and probably three days.
The following is an extract from Donnel
ly’s invective against Elihu R. Washburn :
If there bo in our midst one low, sordid,
vulgar soul ; one barren mediocre intelli
gence ; one heart callous to every kindly
sentiment, and to every generous emotion ;
one tongue leprous with slander ; one mouth
which is like unto a den of foul beasts, giv
ing forth deadly odors; if there bo here one
character which, while blotched and spotted,
yet craves, nnd rants, and blackguards like
a prostitute ; if there be here one bold and
empty bellowing demagogue, it is the gentle
man from Illinois.
House. —Windoni presented his resolu
tion censuring Washburn.
Washburn also presented a resolution,
tho purport of which has not transpired.
The Speaker requested them to withhold
until after court.

Washington, May 4. —Home : A Com
mittee of seven, with power to send for per
sons and papers, were appointed in the Don
nelly-Washburn case.
A motion to expunge Saturday’s proceed
ings caused much excitement, but was with
drawn after Donnelly and Washburn had
withdrawn offensive remarks.
Pending the motion to adjourn, Donnelly
asked leave tha‘ Washburn and he should
imitate Thomas and Stanton, and take a
drink. Washburn proclaimed himself a
temperance man. Adjourned.
This evening’s Star has the following :
“Impeachment stock fluctuates hour by
hour. To-day it is shaky. Why, is not
demonstrated. The President and his
counsel are confident of his acquittal. They
figure out not more, at the outside, than
thirty two votes for conviction.”
Revenue to day one million six hundred
forty live thousand dollars.
The White House was crowded all day
with visitors.
