Kelgiurn of tho twentieth of May, eighteen hundred aud sixty-three, the siiin of fifty live thousand five hundred and eighty four dollar* in coin, and such further sum as may lie necessary to carry out the stipulation of Hie convention providing for payment of interest on the said sum and on the portion of the principal remaining unpaid, Sec. 2. ami be it further enacted, Thai, any oflicer of the army or navy of the Uni ted States who shall, after the passage of this act, accept or bold any appointment in the diplomatic or consular service of tho government, shall be considered as having resigned his said office, and the placo hold by him in the military or naval service shall redeemed and taken to be vacant,and shall be tilled in tlm same manner as if the said oflicer Imd resigned the same. And lie it enacted, That no diplo malic or consular officer shall receive salary for the time during which he may he absent from his post hy leave or otherwise, if such absence shall exceed sixty days in any one year.
