The Chronicle editor, yesterday, virtually acknowledged his inability to cope success fully with one of our distinguished fellow citizeas, whom he alludes to as “the most active, energetic, and influential leader" of the Uniou party. Removal. Messrs. John 0. Schreiner A Sons, it will he seen, have removed to No. 183 Broad (street, where they "ill he happy to see their old friends and all the new ones who way be pleased to call on them. Call and see for yourselves Stolen l otion* The cotton stolen Friday night, front the warehouse yard of 11. C. Bryson, Esq., on Reynolds street, was recovered by 9 a. m., yesterday, by our wide awake Police, and the best of it is, they also secured James and William Galphin, the thieves, and the ■aider will find in another place what Judge McLaws did with them. Carnival of Crime. After a dearth then comes a surfeit, it seems. Friday night the “old Harry” was nil about. Added to the two incendiarisms was cotton stealing and an attempt at i-liop If.irtg, and various and sundry other crimes against the law and good morals of the community. A Stampede. A ISuscher’s hoi-e, attached to a wagon, y.iterday afternoon, took fright while oil his way to market, and after running the length of lower Broad street, fetched tip against Mr. Newby’s porch, knocking one of the pillars 'relit under. A gentleman, seeing the rapid approach of the furious animal, took shelter under the porch, and you can imagine his feelings when he saw the bricks falling around his feet. No harm done, except a little scare and the displacement of the pillar. Highway Robbery. On Friday last, while Dave Walton, a veil known colored barber of this city, and a friend of his, wore on their way to Augusta, from a trip in upper South Caro lina, they were halted in the road by two men, with pistols in hand, who wished to know if they had any money. Dave said “a little,’' and exhibited twenty dollars. The robbers acted generous and took live dollars apiece, returning ten dollars to Davc j rto rut whip to his team and came on his * a y rejoicing (or rather lamenting). Trav tlhrs would do well to go prepared for such oont as the above. Fins. (, n yesterday at 2 a. m., an alarm of lira was given, nml the store of Messrs. Id. F. See notice of our old friend Griffin in another column—-“ Summer Goods’ and ' Mexican Blankets”—rather an incongruous assortment for the season, but in this “drippy climate," if there’s one of the latter “left over," we’ll lake the chances of “sum mering,” if one is »cnt to “ye local. Tbe Opera. \y 0 bustard the prediction that a large audience will attend Concert Hall, to mor row evening, to hear the Opera—in which Miss Isabel McCulloch will take n promi nent part. Judge McLaws had up befoio him ves terday the two cotton thieves nrrested by the Police of tbis city, as mentioned in another place. State vs. Win. Gnlphin and James Gal phin, charge, “larceny from the house.’’ The first was committed, the second retain ed for examination. The State vs. Wm. Bragg, for “kidnapping or false imprisonment of an infant." This is a singular case, nnd will be examined into on Monday (to-morrow). The defend ant stands charged with hiving clandes tinely abstracted an infant child, only a few hours old, from the side of its mother and substituting an older child in its place. The mother upon discovering the changed size, made some remark about it, and was assured by the old nurse that “infants al ways swell out alter birth," which seems to have been satisfactory until now, when the cheat lias been discovered. Hardontc. Just imagine a man— well, ho may have the form of one, we suppose—making him self happy nnd hilarious over the misfortunes of others, because they may conscientiously differ from Him in politics, religion or any other thing—and to add to this the insinu ation that they brought it upon themselves. What would you think of such a human being ? Wc won’t call such a being a man, for no true man would be guilty of such emanations. It may be that there arc some beings wearing the human form and shape, who cannot help their idiosyueracies, but we cannot see how it is possible, and can only add, God help them ! A word to the wise, etc. Selah. Nad Accident. A large portion of Iho mail that came lo the Atlanta Postoffice, yesterday, was cov ered with blood. . Upon inquiry we learn that a collision had occurred on ihe Orange and Alexandria Railroad, in which the route agent was killed. The blood of the. unfortu nate man came through on the mails. Some of our exchange papers wore so deeply stained with it that we threw them away without removing the wrappers. —Atlanta Era, Saturday. /. uuusta'marke IS. Saturday, May 16 —l\ M. Washing ion, May IG.—Article 11th.— Guilty, 33 ; not guilty, ID. Fowler, Fessen den, Grimes, Henderson, Van Winkle, Trumbull, and Ross voting not guilty. [SECOND DISPATCH. I Washington, May 16.—The Court met this morning, and on motion of Sonator Williams it was decided by a voto of 34 to 19 to vote on the olevonth article first. Ross and Willy voting with those iu favor of acquittal. Wade voted in the affirmative. This voto is considered conclusive of acquittal, as it shows only a strength of 34 for conviction. I THIRD DISPATCH.] Washington, May 16. —The vote on tho 11th article stood 35 to 19. Ross, the doubt ful Senator, voted nay, saving tho day for the President. After which Chase declared the President acquitted oil the 11th article, which was ordered to be read first. A motion to adjourn to the 26th instant was declared out of order. An nppeul was sustained, when Henderson moved to adjourn to July. With this vote pending, adjournment to the 26th instant is probable. The Court adjourned to Tuesday, the 26th. Wade voted throughout the day. [ FOURTH dispatch.] Washington, May 16. —The Seuate Judi ciary Committee reported without amend meut the House hill admitting Arkansas. It lies over. The omnibus admission bill from the House was referred to the Judiciary Com mittee. The Court opened at twelve o’clock—all the Senators present. The Republican Senators voting against calling the eleventh article first were : Fes senden, Fowler, Henderson, Ross, Trunible, Van Winkle, and Willy. Oil the question, Wade voted for the first lime during the trial. Chase, after admonishing the people to quietness, ordered the Clerk to read the eleventh article, when questions were pro pounded in terms agreed upon, and those voting “not guilty" were Bayard, Buckalcw, Davis, Dixon, Doolittle, Fessenden, Fowler, Grimes, Henderson, Hendricks, Johnson, McCrcery, Norton, Patterson of Tennessee, Ross, Saulsbury, Trumbull, Van Winkle, and Vickers—l 9. Williams moved a fifteen minutes recess, which was negatived, when he moved an adjournment to tho 26th. Johnson suggested tho announcement of the vote. Chase said he would not anuounoo the vote until taken on all the articles, unless the Senate ordered otherwise. Drake raised a point that nothing was in order pending the motion to adjourn. Henderson said the motion to adjourn was not in order while tho roll was pending. Chase sustained the last poiut, and directed tho Secretary to read the roll, which being read, the Chief Justice said there were 35 votes for guilty, and 19 for not guilty, and that the President was therefore acquitted on the eleventh article. Chase then stated that the Senate was now in process of carrying out the order to proceed to vote upon the articles ol im peachment, and no motion was now in order while that was pending. Conness appealed, The appeal was sustained by thirty to twenty four. Then by a vote of thirty two to twenty one to adjourn to tho twenty sixth. Wade resumed the Chair, and alter a long debate, a joint resolution, adjourning to the twenty sixth was negatived, and the Seuate adjourned as usual. The House refused to entertain the reso lution appointing an inquiry committee on the conduct of tbe Missouri delegation, by 28 to 82. Private hills were resumed. A resolution that, for the further and move efficient prosecution of the impeach ment of the President, tho Managers be directed and instructed to summon aud examine witnesses under oath, to send for persons and papers, to employ a stenographer, and to appoint sub-committees to take the testimony, the expense thereof to be paid Irom the contingent fund of the House, was adopted.
