But it was one, la-o three, four, five minutes before he mo think of a switch-tender’s . What if Aer had n ailed a minute be fore minding his lather ! A switeh.tender j„ Prussia was just going to move the rail, in order to put a coming train of cars on a side track, when ho caught sight of his little son plating on the track. Tho engine was in sight, and ho hadn’t a moment to spare, lie might jump and save his child ; but he couM act do that and turn the switch in time; and if it were not done, the on-com ing train would meet another train, and a terrible crash and smash tako place. The safety of hundreds of valuable lives depend ed upon his fidelity. What could he do ? What did he do ! ' "Lie down ! lie down !” he called, with a loud, quick voice to the jjjild; and seizing tho switch, the train passed safely on its proper track. 1 Did the heavy train run over the little hov! Was he killed l Was he crushed to nieces! No; for he did just as his father told him, and did it instautly. He fell flat between the rails, and the cars went high over his head; and when the anxious father sprang to the spot, there he was alive and well; nota hair of his head was touched. It was his quick obedience, you sec, that saved his life. He did not stop a minute. Even a moment’s hesitation would have been too late. SERMON TO YOUNG MEN. Yon are the architects of your own for tune. Rely upon your own strength of body and soul. Take for your motto self reliance, honesty and industry. For your star, faith, perseveranco and pluck, and inscribe on your banner, ‘‘Be just and fear not." Donttako too much advice; keep at the helm and steer yonr own ship. Think well of yourselves. Strike om. Fire above the mark you intend to hit. As sume your position. Do not practice ex cessive humility ; you can’t get above your level. Water don’t run up hill; put pota toes in a cart over a rough road, and small potatoes will go to the. bottom. Energy, in vincible determination with a right motive, are the levers that move the world. The great art of commanding is to take a fair share of the work, Civilty costs nothing and bnys everything. Don’t drink. Don't smoke. Don't chew. Don’t swear, Don’t gamble. Don’t steal, Don’t deceive,— Don’t tattle. Be polite. Be generous. Be kind. Study hard. Be in earnest. Bo self-reliant. Read good books. Love your fallow man, as well as God. Love your country, and obey the laws. Love truth' Love virtue. Always do what your con science tells yon to he a dnty, and leave the consequence with God.—//. G. East man. Josh Billings ox Hens. —The best time tew sett a hen iz when the hen iz ready. I kant tell you what the best breed iz. but the hlianghigh is the meanest. It kosts az much to board one az it duz a stage boss, and you might az well undertake to fat a fanning mill, running oats thru it. Thero aint no profit in keeping a hen for hiz eggs, if he haz throat disease; there iz a great menny goes to pot every year by this rnellonkolly disease. I kant tell eggsactly how to pick ont a good lien, but az a general thing the longc ared ones, I kno, are the leaßt apt to skretch up the garden' Eggs packed in equal parts of salt and lime water, with the other end down, will keep from .‘SO to 40 years, if they are not disturb ed. Fresh beef steak iz good for hens ; I suppose 4 or 5 lbs. a day would be all a lieu would need at fust alone. I shall be hap pee to advize with you at any time on the hen question, and take pay for my advice in eggs. Something for the Sick.—A correspon dent writes : Freq uently we find sick people whose stomachs reject all kinds of nourish ments until conditions follow that in many Instances terminate fatally. In twenty in stances in which I have heard the popular sick-bed nourishments prescribed, and re jected by an invalid’s enfeebled stomach, ‘have never known the simple saucer of parched corn pudding or bowl of gruel re used. The corn is roasted brown, pre cisely as we roast coffee, ground as fine as meal, id a coffee mill, and made either into mush, gruel, or thin cakes, h iked lightly r «wn, and given either warm or cold, in c ear water,or whatever dressing the stomach ■ I receive or retain. Parched corn and ' neal " o, ‘ e< l in skimmed milk and fed fre quently to children sulfering Ironi summer arrh®a, will almost always cure,as it will IMnteiy * n adults, anti, I believe, the caolcra in its earliest stages.
