“No, I don't, 1 can't ever get tune to
read a paper, so there isn’t any use to pay
lor one? 1 have ail I can do to support my
fomilv without paying out my money for
and spending my time reading

flour and polk, and lot the paper slide.”
• l of worse you cm do us you like. I
tbink that no titan on a farm can afford to
1* without a reliable agricultural paper.
Some men get rich hy farming whilst others
i’etpoor*: the principal cause of this is that
Hinjo understand their business and others
do not. By mean aof this paper you can
learn how successful farmers' have succeed
ed and how unsuccessful oues have failed: —
vou can profit by tho experience of both,
voucau also keep posted with regard to
Various improvements constantly affecting
tillage—this, l consider very important.”
••Well, well, there's my cows in the oats
and 1 must get 'em out.”
This conversation took place between
William Smith and Peter Jones, on the oc
casion of the former calling on tho latter
to try w induce him to subscribe for a pa
per for which Smith was forming a club.
Thcac men were at this time in about equal
circumstances in regard to worldly goods.
Previous industry and economy hud’ furnish
ed each with means enough to buy n small
Farm. Each had been doing business for
himself about two years, and so far their
sneeess had been about equal. Being al
most entirely without experience in an oc
cupation which they had probably chosen
because they knew nothing about it, so fat
neither had done so well as to excite ro
mark, still, a carefnl observer would notice
that they bad widely divergent ideas with
respect to the proper way of doing their
business. Whilst Smith believed that ho
could do ranch toward learning a correct
theory yf {arming from books and papers,
Jones considered such things entirely un
less, Ins theory being that success only
came of hard knocks and economy, and
this he lived up to with scrupulous exact
ness.
As time passed away the difference of tlicir
opinions kept working on their surround
ings, nntil their farm, buildings, stock, etc.,
hardly presented even n Temote similarity.
Jones kept all tire time hard at work, and
never expended a cent unless to supply
some manifest, bodily want. Sunday was
his only holiday; this he usually spent the
greater part of in lied, resting himself as
be expressed it. Nature had kindly fur
nished him a hardy frame, and as he was
perfectly temperate in his eating and drink
ing his health remained almost perfect, and
be. as well as his neighbors, thought him
self doing very well.
Smith, in the mean time, had expended
nearly all the profits of his farm in improv
ing h:s stock, buying manures, getting his
luiees into proper order, improving his
ntiildings.jbuying necessary farm machinery,
and in doing a thousand and one tilings
that appeared to him would eventually be
remunerative. In making innovations lie
sae more ahead of his neighbors than
Jones was behind them, and as he spent
considerable time, as they considered to no
purpose, he received a smaller share of their
approbation. At the expiration of six years
from the commencement of their farming
experience Jones had quite a snug sum at
interest, and his farm lacked much of being
m a had condition. True, his buildings,
*ere none the better for the length of time
they had been in use and the scanty repairs
IT had received ; still, they were not so
mod) worse than his neighbors as to attract
attention. Ilia stock was of the most
pmuativc description ; the pigs in bis pen
wing direct descendants of an old sow that

"none conld toll him anything about the

besides expending #25 more in getting him
homo; still, ho eonsidered this a good in
vestment, and thought that some one could
afford to pay him near that for the one he
had to turn’off.
lie and Jones, in spite of their difference
of opinion, had always been on vorv friend
ly terms, and now ho concluded that if he
could sell this bull to Jones for S2OO, it
would be an excellent bargain for both ; mid
ho determined to make a special effort to
accomplish it.
Goiug to that individuals houso the next
evening, he found himself and wife engaged
paring apples by baud, to dry. After a
few common place remarks, Smith made
known his business.
“That’s a very lino critter,” said Jones,
“how much do you want for him ?”
“About three years ago, Baid Smith, “1
paid $250 for one no better, and it cost me
considerable, both time and money, to got
him home, I think this one should bring
me $200."
“Two hundred dollars !’’ Jones vocifer
ated, “two hundred dollars, why man he
you crazy or do you think I’m a fool; be
cause you’ve swindled away your money at
that rate it is no sign that any one else will.
1 heard that you’d been asking outlandish
prices for your critters, hut 1 nevor thought
you'd try me on. Why I’ve got a pair as
big and nice as this one yon want to sell,
though they're four year old, and you may
have ’em both for one hundred.”
“Well, Mr. Jones, .if you think my price
so far out of the wav, I should like to know
what you think him worth.”
“As I told yon before,” said Jones, ail
the while bitisily at work on his flinty little
apples, lie’s a good one, and I’ll give you
forty dollArs for him "
"How much do you call your heat two
year old worth ?”
“I wouldn't take a cent less then $25 for
that hrindlc heifer. You must have noticed
her,"
“Yea, sho is very good. 1 suppose it has
cost as much to raise her as it has the ani
mal l wish to sell you.”
“1 shouldn't wonder if it had ; she al
ways oat a heap.”
“Now,” said Smith, yon are willing to
pay me sls more for mine than you ask
for yours ; from this I conclude that 1 have
received sls more for the same amount of
feed than you have."
“I don't know about flint,” and Jones
quitted knife and apples and began to
scratch his head. Ilis neighbor’s talk ovi -
dently annoyed him, but he was a man
that words could not materially discompose
and he continued “there’s no use talking,
I'll give you just what I said, and not a
cent more ; that's settled.’’
“But according to y our own showing the
extra blood of my animal makes him worth
more than that.”
“O, all blood is alike. How is your ap
ple crop this year, Mr. Smith ?"
"J had nearly ali of my trees grafted
fmtr years ago, as you remember, and they
don’t bear very ranch yet •, still, what I
have are very"line.”
“Here’s more of your extra blood, going
without apples four years; you’re welcome
to it.”
Smith soon went homo, and finally con
cluded to sell whatever animals lie had to
dispose of, for what they were really worth
as individuals, and he satisfied with the
handsome profits they would yield him.
Ilis crops increased to such an extent, that
it was unnecessary to have them all con
sumed on the farm to keep it m condition,
and what he had to dispose ol was the
source of a considerable income. His
neighbors were soon willing to give him an
extra price for the fruit from his ‘ grafted'’
orchard, and his superior grains of all
kinds were always ready sale at the very
highest prices.
Jones had already reached tho summit
of his prosperity. His increased family
consumed all that he could compel his farm
to produce; at times they would encroach
on the amount he had so carefully hoarded,
lie continued to work hard as ever, and his
slightly bout frame and unelastic step, but
too plainly indicated that lie had passed
that point beyond which the strongest, man
must fail. Ilis mind was like an unused
room, wherein ail sorts of useless rubbish
accumulates; still it contained nothing
useful or agreeable to contemplate. In tho
future lie could see hut a dismal pathway,
strewn with thorns, its roses he had care
fully destroyed years before.
Smith continued to prosper, and when,
in a few years, debts and shattered health
compelled Jones to sell out, he had the
means at hand to not only buy his farm,
hut to fence it ami to put it in proper re
pairs generally.
