Wh»t is it to be a Christian ? Is it not to
Ui re in and seek to become like, in moral
character,’ the Lord Jesus Christ? How
many at* there in this nation who do thus ?
How manr. even in the church, are there
Hut consciously, and resolutely, and coa
-tantlt strive "to briug themselves into
Lrfect subjection to the law of Christ ?
If this is too much to ask, or to expect of
(he nation, how many arc there who have
e ren a settled and honest intention to govern
their outward life, without devoting their
heart, according to Christ’s precepts ? How
muj among the people ? llow many among
the rulers? Why the church itself—which is
always the best of the land—is s >dly deficient
in firm and pervading Christian principle ;
vhat can be expected Irom the rest of the
people ? . .
Let us l°°k into this matter a moment.
Be*in with the top. Look at the President!
Look at the Capitol, and all who are in it.
Some high and noble souls—many who have
soniejhigh and noble traits; but how are
they, taken a! in all, amt year by year ?
How far from Christian, both in public and
private life. We should not dare look too
closely at the conduct, or the hearts of the
men we set on high to represent our nation.
Look at our State capitals and city halls,
and see what manner of doings go on in
them. Dare the most whitewashing reporter
1 say that such things prove the Christianity
; of our nation ?
Look at our law schools, our medical
schools, our West Point. Sodom was
scarcely less Christian than these places
are. except when now and then God’s
Spirit enters the door and cleanses them
for a season. Happy is it for human
nature that the Holy Spirit can dwell
where thou and I, reader, could not endure
life.
Look at ‘‘society.” Is it with its glare,
its hollowness, its pride, its lies, its weari
ness at morn, and its fever at night—is
‘•society” Christian ?
Look at “philanthropy.” It calls man
divine; and it calls Christ “the son of a
peasaut sire”—is “philanthropy" Christian?
There is a true philanthropy whose baso
and whose lifeblood arc the love of Jesus
Christ, and man for whom he died; but
this is not that which the many really self
denying and zealous helpers of man, that
are on every side, Reel.
Look at literature. The very religious
papers, while they on the one side have
Christian teaching, on the other have covert
thrusts and slurs at the truth, if nothing
worse. Are these Christians?
Books, large and small—stories, long
and short—are made on purpose to poison
with infidelity the minds of our people.
This, besides the thousand isms that,
having no thought for or against Chris
tianity, are merely heathen. Our school
hooks are heathen. Christianity is as
systematically kept out of them as politics
are kept by some ministers out of religion.
The mass of our scholars—arc they Chris
tian or heathen? And the churches—
where is there one that contains not one or
more known and felt trangressors, that has
courage and fidelity enough to try and
expel him ?
Listen to the conversation of the people.
How much do they speak to one another of
the Lord, or the thing that he loves ? How
many, even of those that would like to feci
free to speak at all times such things as
the Lord loves to put down in his book of
remembrance? Is the conversation of our
nation Christian or heathen ?
And, lastly, look at the family. How
ntany times is that which should be a
little heaven rcal’y much more like a little
™‘- The parents unjust, violent, un
living; and the children impudent, selfish,
quarrelsome. Who does not know' more
r| ich families than lie would like to point
out ? is there who knows, intimately
enough to be a good judge, more than two
w three families really leavened and
controlled, from father to youngest born,
'■ Christian principle ? Are the families
"f our nation Christian or heathen?
«is a startling thing to look this subject
' a the face. We are not a Christian
oation. Britain is not a Christian nation.
ere is no Christian nation on the earth—■
'•■is, if we use the name as Lie from whom
*c take it would use it. The world is
waiting' yet. The true leaven is working,
)U J. " le world's will has never yet, in any
nation, been lully turned towards Christ ;

I am satisfied that those who talk and
write most against us aro ignorant of us,
and the workings of “Mormonism,” so
termed. If they were to visit ns, unpreju

not the degenerate and ungovernable people
they have been representing us to he. They
would find large numbers of bright, intelli
gent, nnd healthy children growing up, dcarly
beloved and cherished by their parents, who
love, educate, and promote the happiness of
their oilspring, and aro bound by the most
sacred and holy ties to love nnd cherish

and harmony prevailing in our midst.

defamed and maligned Utah, ladies arc
respected, virtue preserved and chastity
guarded witii the strictest care ; aud trust
ing, confiding woman is cared for with the
tenderest and most delicate regards.
I am safe in saying that there is not one
in every fifty of the ladios of our Territory
who could possibly be induced, in tho face
of all the malignity so unsparingly heaped
upon thoir husbands, fathers, and brothers,
by pseudo regenerators, to exchange situa
tions with the ladies cither East or West.
Nay, famine aud the sword, through which
ordeals many of us have passed, would fail
to induce them to do so.
All wc. nsk is, let us alone. Wc are
harming no one, and desire to live in peace,
undisturbed in pursuing the duties of life
—in “minding our own business;” and if
others will do the same, they will have a
steady and profitable employment.

part of the Constitution.
