republican platform.
The National Republican party of the United States,
assembled in National Convention, in the city Os Chi
cago, ap the SOtli day of May, 1868, make the following
Declaration of Principles ;
Ist Wk congratulate the country on the assured suc
cess of the reconstruction policy of Congress, as
evinced by the adoption, in a majority of the States
lately in rebellion, of Constitutions securing equal civil
and political rights to all, and regard it as the duty of
the Government to sustain those institutions, and to
prevent the people of such States from being remitted
to a state es anarchy.
2d. The guarantee, by Congress, of equal suffrage to
all loyal men in the South was demanded by every con
sideration of public safety, of gratitude and of justice,
and must be maintained, while the question of suffrage
In all the loyal States properly belongs to the people of
thosq States.
3d. We denounce all forms of repudiation as a na
tional crime, and the national honor requires the pay
ment of the public indebtedness, in the utmost good
faith, to all creditors, at home and abroad, not only
according to the letter, but the spirit of the laws
under which it was contracted.
4th. It is due to the labor of the nation that taxation
should be equalized and reduced as rapidly as the na
tional faith will permit.
r stb. The national debt, contracted, as it has been, for
the preservation of the Union fbr all time to come,
should be extended over a fair period for redemption,
and it is the duty of Congress to reduce the rate of in
terest thereon, whenever it can honestly be done.
Sth. That the best policy to diminish our' burden of
debt is to so improve our credit that capitalists will seek
to loon us money at lower rates of interest than we now
pay, and mast continue to pay, so long as repudiation,
° r °P en cover L ’s threatened or sus-
of the United States should be
administered with the strictest economy, and the cor
ruptions which have been so shamefully nursed and
fostered by Andrew Johnson call loudly for radical re
form.
Bth. We profoundly deplore the untimely and tragic
death of Abraham Lincoln, and regret the accession of
Andrew Johnson to tire Presidency, who has acted
treacherously to the people who elected him and the
cause he was pledged to Support; has usurped high
legislative att judicial fuactimȣltes refused to exe
cute the lawflHUs uireA his tatßitefflae lo induce other
officers to-ignore and violate ; has employed
his executive powers to the property-,
peace, liberty and abu-ed the
pardoning power: has dehonnw<l Mia Stations 1 Legisla
ture as unconstitutional; has persistently an<t corruptly
resisted; by every measure in his power, every proper
attempt at the reconstruction of the States lately in re
bellion; has perverted the public patronage, into an
engine of wholesale corruption; and has been justly
impeached for high crimes and ngisdeiHcanors, and
properly pronounced guilty thereof., by the vote of
thirty-five Senators.
9th. The doctrine of Great Britain and other European
powars, that because a man is, Once, a subject, he is
always so, anal be every hazard by the
United States, as a relic of the feudal time, not author
ized by the law of nations, and at war with our national
honor and independence. Naturalized sitizens are enti
tled to be protected In all their rights es citizenship a«
though they were natural born, and no citizen of the
United States, native or naturalized, must be liable to
arrest and imprisonment, by any foreign power, for acts
done, or words spoken, in this country, and if so arrested
and imprisoned, it is Bic duty of the Government to
interfere in hisbehalf.
lOtii. Os allwWo were faithful in the trials of the late
war, there were none entitled to more especial honor
than tho brave sbldiers and seamen, who endured the
hardships of the campaign and cruise, and imperilled
their lives hi the service of the country. Tho bounties
and pensions provided by law for these brave dafeqdors
of the nation are obliagtions never to be forgotten. The
widows and orphans ofthe gallant dead are the wards of
the people, a sacred legacy bequeathed fn the nation’s
protecting care.
11th. Foreign immigration, which In the past lias
added so much to the wealth, development of resources, -
and increase of power of this natidfi, the asylum of tire
oppressed of all nations, should be fostered and encour
aged by a liberal and just policy.
12th. This Convention declares its sympathy with all
the oppressed people which are struggling for their
rights.

Asiatic Cholera in China.
ALMOST EVERY CASE
CURED WITH
PAIN KILLER.
o
Read the following lktter from
Rev. R. Telford, Missionary in China, now
visiting ins home in Pennsylvania:
Washington, Pa., June 25,1866.
iWessrs. Perry Davis & Son, Providence, R. 1.7
Dear Sirs —During a residence of some ten
years as a Missionary in Siam and China, I found
your vegetable Pain Killer a most valuable
remedy for that fearful scourge, the Cholera.
In administering the medicine. I found it moat
effectual to give a teaspoonful of Pain Killer in a
gilt of liot water sweetened with sugar; then,
after about fifteen minutes, begin to give a table
spoonfnl of the same mixture every minute until
relief was obtained. Apply hot applications to
tlie extremities. Bathe the stomach witli Pain
Killer, clear and rub the limbs briskly. Os those
whe had the cholera, and.took the medicine faith
fully in the way stilted above, eight out of ten
recovered. Yours, trnly,
r Telford.
If an attack with Diarrhcoa, Dysentery, or
Cramp Colic, don't delay tlie use of the Pain
Killer. Sold by all medicine dealers. Price, 25
cents, 50 cents, and $1 per bottle.
Manhattan, Kansas, April 17,1866.
Gentlemen — * • * j want to say a little
more about the Pain Killer. 1 consider it a very
valuable medicine, and always keep it on hand.
I have travelled a good deal since I have been in
Kansas, and never without taking it with me.
In my practice I used it freely for the Asiatic
Cholera, in 1849, and with better npy
Other medicine ; I also used it here fpr’chfiferfain
1855, with the same good result.
Trnly, yonrs, A.
Bwato,
Cholera !"***! regret to say that the
cholera has prevailed here of late to a fearful
extent. For tlie last three weeks, from ten to
fifty or sixty fatal cases each day has been re
ported. I shonld add that the Pain Killer, sent
recently from tbe Mission House, has been used
witli considerable success during this epidemic.
If taken in season is generally effectual in check
ing the disease.
Rev. CHARLES HARDINIG,
Shoiapore, India.
[From the Portland Monthly !
Sommer Complaint and Dysentery.
BoweLcomplainta soern just now to be tlie
prevailing element, and any medicine that is
everywhere acceptable, and that is reliable, is a
very desirable acquisition. From what we have
seen, heard, and experienced, we believe Davis'
Pain Killer is this desideratum. For tlie best
method of using it, we quote from the directions:
“For common bowel complaints, give one tea
spoonful in a gill of new milk and molasses, in
equal pans, stirred well together; lessen the dose
tor children, according to the age. If the pan* be
severe, bathe the bowels and back with the medi
cine. Tliis mode of treatment is good in cases of
the cholera morbus, sudden stopfiages, eto. Re
peat tbe dose every honr.
“Tlie quickest wav I ever saw the .dysentery
cured was bv taking one spooafnl «f the Pain
Killer in one gill of milk and mohsaea stirred
well together and drank hot, at the same time
bathing the bowels freely with medicine. Let
the dose be repeated every boar until the patient
is relieved.’’
If every person who has reason to fear Uns
disease would provide themselves with a bottle
of this medicine, and use as occasion required, we
believe a great amount of suffering and sickness
would be saved. je!2—2m
