SUNDAY MORNING AugustO, 1868 FACETLE. When Boston takes snuff, tbe people all over the State sneeze “Massachusetts.” A throe of anguish—the last throw of a bankrupt dice-player. A woman's pride and a sailor’s guide—the needle. Smuggling nutmegs may be a small crime, but it might lead to a grater. Old port is much sought after, but not half as much as Newport. Return matches—tbe remarriages of peo ple who run away and come back. Kve—the only woman who never threat ened to go and live with her mother. Parties at a dead lock should extricate themselves with a skeleton key. In a Western town, where labor movements have been frequent, capitalists will not own clocks, because they “strike” too often. The physician who is “allowed to be clever,” returns sincere thunks for the in dulgence. A writer may be said to be more free than a king, inasmuch as ho cun “choose his own subjects.” When Adam asked Eve for the first kiss, what was her reply 1 1 don’t cure, Adam, • if you do. “1 came straight from Newark,” said a crooked little lady, in answer to a question put her. “Did you ?” said a wag. “Then you must have been confoundedly warped by the way.” A poor fellow protested to his girl in the hayfield, that his eyes hadn’t come together all night for thinking about her. “Very likely they did not,” replied the sweet plague of his life; for I see.your noseis still between them.” “Sam, did you see Mr. Jenkins, the new overseer?” “Yes, massa, 1 met him down by the cotton-gin.” “He’s a good looking fellow, isn’t he ?” “Well, massa, he talks like a good looking man—he made a bow, dat’s all he said.” A newspaper biographer, trying to say that his subject “was hardly able to bear the demise of bis wife,” was made by the inex orable printer to say “wear the chemise of his wife.” During a series of wet days a gentleman ventured to congratulate his umbrella maker. “Yes, that’s all very well, sir,” he replied ; “but then there’s nothing whatever doing in parasols." A dull fellow speaking of an acquaintance to a journalist, said : “He is very timid ; he couldn’t say ‘boo’ to a goose.” “How do you know?” inquired the journalist; “did you try him ?” Dante was asked by the Prince of Verona how he could account for the fact that, in the household ol princes, tbe court fool was in greater favor than tbe philosopher. “Sim ilarity of minds,” said the fierce genius, “is all over the world a test of friendship.” The following advertisement appears in a Western paper, under the head of “A Wife Wanted “Any gal wat’s got a bed, a coffee pot, skillet, knows how to cut out britches, can make ti hunting shirt, and knows how to take care of young tins, ken hev mv sarvices till death parts both en us.” Two boys, one of them blind of an oye, were discoursing on the merits of their respective masters. “How many hours do you get for sleep?” said one. “Eight,” replied the other. “Eight! why, I only get four!” “Ah I” said tbp first, “but recollect you have only one eye to close, and I have two-” An eloquent orator proposes to “grasp a ray of light from the great orb of day, spin it into threads of gold, and with them weave a shroud in which to wrap the whirlwind which dies upon the bosom of our Western prairies.” We fear the ma chinery will break before the fabric is through the loom. An orator, perspiring freely,-in a husky voice said; in short, ladies and gentlemen, I can only say that I wish I had a window in my bosom that you might see the emo tions of my heart. The newspapers printed the speech, leaving the “n” out-of “window.” Wilson, the celebrated vocalist, was upset one day in his carriage near Edinburg. A Scotch paper, after reporting the accident, said : “We are happy to state that be was able to appear the following evening in three pieces 1” • A clergyman of indifferent character, going to read prayers at another village, found great difficulty in putting on an old fashioned surplice. “I think,” said he to the clerk, “the devil is in the surplice.” The astonished clerk stared until the parson got the garment on, and then sarcastically exclaimed, “I think as how he is, sir I” AMERICAN MUSICAL CLASS BOOK. Designed fob female colleges. Institutions, Seminaries, and Normal and High Schools, containing Elementary Instruc tions, Voeal Exercises and Solfeggios, and a valuable collection of Duete, Trios and concerted pieces, By T. BISSELL. Price 75 Cents. Among the numerous works of the kind this cannot fail of a prominence, since its peculiar features are inch as will commend it at once to the patronage of those for whom it is chiefly intended. Ito rudimental lessons proceed with a regularity of precision that cannot fail to fix permanently on the mind of the pupHthe essentials ot success in future studies —the exercises are in a form to attract the attention, and the selection of music is one of the best, if not the superior, of all similar collections. Principles of Educational Institutions. Music Teachers, and others interested in books of this class, will find it advantageous to examine this volume. OLIVER DITSON & CO.. Telford, Missionaiy in China, now visiting his borne in Poimsyl vanta: Washington. Pa., June 25,1866. Messrs. Perry Davis A Son. Providence,R. I.: Dear Sirs-‘During a residence of some ten years as a Missionary in Siam and Chiua, I found your vegetable Pain Killer a most valuable remedy for that fearful scourge, the Cholera In administering the medicine, I found it most effectual to give a teaspoonful of Pain Killer in a gill of hot water sweetened with sugar; then, after about fifteen minutes, begin to give a table spoouful ot the same mixture every minute until relief was obtained. Apply hqt applications to the extremities. Hallie the stomach with Pain Killer, clear and rub the limbs briskly. Os those who had the cholera, and took the medicine faith fully in the way stated above, eight out of ten recovered. Yours, truly. k Telford. If an attack with Diarrlirniu Dysentery, or Cramp Colic,.don’t delay the f sc of the Pain Killer. Sold by all medicine dealers Price, 25 cents, 50 cents, and $1 per bottle. Manhattan, Kansas,,April 17,18(16. Gentlemen — * * ’ I want to say a little more about the Pain Killer. I consider it a very valuable medicine, and always keen it on liana. I have travelled a good deal since 1 tinve been in Kausas, and never without taking it \vith me. In my practice I used it freely for the Asiatic Cholera, in 18117, aud with better success than any other medicine ; I also used it here for cholera iu 1855, with the aaiuagood result. Truly, yours, A. HUNTING, M. D. Swato, China. Cholera! * * * I regret to say that the cholera has prevailed here of late to a fearful extent. For the last three weeks, from ten to fifty or sixty fatal cases each day lias been re ported. I should add that the Pain Killer, sent recently from the Mission House, has been used with considerable success during this epidemic. If taken iu season is generally effectual in check ing the disease. Rev. CHARLES HARDINIG, Sjiolaporo, India. [From the Portland Mknthly.l Summer Complaint ant Dysentery. Bowel complaints seem just now Io be the prevailing element, and auy medicine that is everywhere acceptable, and that is reliable, is a very desirable acquisition. From what we have seen, heard, and experience!!, wo believe Davis’ Pain Killer is this desideratum. For the best method of usingit, we ipiote from the directions: “For common bowel complahjts, give one tea apooulul iu a gill of new milk and molasses, in equal parts, stirred well together; lessen the dose for children, according to the age. If the pain be severe, bathe the bowels and back with the medi cine. ‘Has mode of treatment is good in cases of the cholera morbus, sudden stoppages, etc. Re peat the dose every hour. “The quickest way 1 ever sqpv the dysentery cured was by taking one spoonful of the Pain Killer in one gill of milk mußmolasses stirred well together and drank hot, st tbe same time bathing the bowels freelv with medicine. Let the dose be repeated every hour until the patient is relieved.” If every person who has reason to fear this disease would provide themselves with a bottle of this medicine, and use as occasion required, we belie ve a great amount of suffering and sickness would ho saved. je!2—2m Special Notice. .Jf > |g! • H ™ i- s S- m tn H EH s r I ■ J - {a -V® “ o * s co Ik i • * Spectacles Rendered Useless.
