Rumor of Fraud—Prompt action
of the Mayor.
Il was rumored on the .streets yesterday
that a large number of colored men, from
Edge-field District, 8. C., would visit this
city to-lay for >lhe purpose of voting. The
rumor spread With electric speed, and crea
ted much excitement. A committee of
prominent citizens, wc learn, called* upon
His Honor Foster Blodgett, notified him
of the rumor, and asked Whether or not there
was reasonable foundation of ils truth. His
Honor replied, that he did not think there
was; but, in order to prevent illegal voting, or
the influx of strangers for the purpose of at
tempting to vote illegally, he would instruct
the keeper of the bridge to prevent its pas
sage by any unusal number of persons,
not citizens, during the day, from the South
Carolina side of the river. Instructions to
this effect were immediately issued, aud a
police force detailed to aid the Bridge
Keeper in the execution of Iho (Trier. We
learn further, that His Honor has ordered a
guard to be stationed at Saud' Bar Ferry, to
prevent, if possible, lire passage into the city
of illegal voters via that point. Mayor
Blodgett has acted with great promptness
in this matter, and proven the sincerity of
his oft-repeated declaration, that while he
desires every qualified voter to exercise the
franchise, untrammelled and agreeably to
the dictates of his conscience, he will do all
in his power to prevent illegal voting.
To Business Men.
The Weekly National Republican will
have an extensive circulation over the ad
jocent counties—thus affording an excellent
opportunity to Advertisers to extend their
Business notices.

Dciuocratic < tmrs»ge.
It in unquestionably true, as toliteudcd by
the New -York -81111, th.-it is a great
tiling, h lilis man above his circumstances.
As that is one of the flctiniliotis of true
Democracy, il follows that coaratc is Demo
cratic. For this r.’ubon, it is, -probably, that
the bemocratio ]> riy now have so much of
it. It is wonderlul, too; 10 See howihey
keep it up- Though; every man of sense
knows that they are airemly beaten beyond
redemption, they yet g" through the duties
of the hour with as much life and elasticity
as if they were sure of victory on Tuesday
next. We never saw a body of men so well
fitted to meet iclverslty ..and ton Cud with,
disaster. This is well, fop- if they were not
thus gifted their siUmtiou would be hard
indeed. Luckily for them, and fur us all,
the dgouy will soon be over. Aller Grant
is elected, wu shall have peace and an era of
uniwwd good feeling. .Meanwhile, let our
Democratic Iri nds keep their watch-fires
brightly burning and their, rentim Is all
widij awake.
