,1/r. Nasby front hie Quiet lietreat at
the Corners Addresses an Epistle
to Gen. Grant, in which he suggests
many things.
Post Office, Confkdebit X Roads,
(Wich ism the State uv Kentucky.)
November 10, 1868.
To Ulysses S. Grant, General and
President Elect:
Sin —The eleckshun is o’er! The
die is cast, uv wich die the Dimocrisy
hev the most uv it. Frankly wo admit
that we are beaten. I studied the
eleckshun returns carefully, and I hev
come to that concloosiou. Hed we
carried Ohio, Pennsylvania, Injianny,
Illinois, Connecticut, Wisconsin, lowa,
Missouri, Kansas and Califomy, anti
lied Virginity, Texas and Mississippi
bin allowed to vote, the result would
have been different. But we didn’t,
therefore we submit. We mite resist,
but, as we hevn’t the strength to do
it, we bow cheerfly to the will of the
people, and recognize you ex our Chief
Magistrate, in the place of A. Johnson,
deceest.
Now the question wieh agitates us
is wat do yoo intend to do ? That’s
wat I want to know, and that’s wat
Deckin Capt. McPelter, and
Issaker Gavitt is demandin in thunder
tones. What do you intend to do ?
Are joo a goin to adopt the merci
less policy uv the extreme Radikels,
or are yoo goin to adopt a consillitory
policy ?
I presoom that yoo don’t understand
the sitooasheu in the South. I allso
presoom that shood yoo visit the Cor
ners, yoo wood find here two classes
of people, whose tastes, habits, incli
nashens and interests vary widely.
On the one hand are the original Ken
tuckians, nv wich Bascom, Deekin
I’ogram, Captain McPelter, and Issaker
Gavitt, are britc and shinin speci
mens, and on the other there is Pol
>ck, the Illiuoy store-keeper, Joe
Bigler, who wuz a Confedrit sojer, but
who has backslid into Ablishnism, ten
ir twenty families uv Northerners
who hev bought land hereabouts, and
the niggers wich were fr?cd by Linkin
..nd the Constooshnel Amendment.
These t« o antagonistic elements are
perpetually at war, and the result is
a chronic onpleasantnis wich hex seri
ously retarded the growth uv this
eekshun. The fault is uv course with
Pollock, Bigler, the Northern farmers
and the niggers. The original Ken
tuckian desire peace—they long and
hunger and thirst for it. But these
other cusses won’t let us hev it The
Forthern farmers wood come here and
buy land and cbntinyooally irritate us
with their presence; they won’t adopt
our habits and customs, but persist in
keepin up their own, and ez we know
'em to be RepuMikins, the site uv one
on our streets perdooses a species uv
frenzy on our citizens wich hez at
times resulted seriously to them. They
hold prayer meeting at each other’s
houses, and take Northern noosepapers
wich wood pizen the minds uv our
people but for the blessed fact that
our people don’t read to any alarmin
extent, and they heVestablished skools
among the nigger children, and are
teachin them to be above the specr to
wich nacher and our theology assmed
them. Bascom told me that they hed
never spent four dollars, all told, at
his bar. Row kin he live in peece
with sicli ? 'Hie niggers won’t work
for us onless we pay ’em, and the
result is our farms are running down.
But little is perdoosed by us, and the
old original Kentucky stock is gettin
to be ez seedy a set ez yoor eyes ever
rested out o?
Now, in regard to us wat are yoo
goin to do ? Are yoo a goin to per
tect us or them ? Are yoo goin to
bring yoor power to bear on their side
"r ourn ? Is Deekin Pogram’s niggers
to be perfected in their insolent re
ioosal to submit to his guidance and
direction, or are they to be left to him
to be dealt with as he chooses ? Is
the citizens uv the Corners to hev the
rite, wich is theirs, to chastise these
beings in their own way, to redoose
1 in to ther natural level ez they see fit,
t are they to be hampered by soljers
and sich, an’ be forced to the hoomili
a>hen uv seein em skul in all respects?
>" short, shel wc under your adminis
iiashun hev the rite to hang niggers
tar an’ feather Northern settlers
' z 've hev bin doin, or not? That’s
:;ic question wich our people ask, an’
"» yoor anser depends the sapport uv
yoo. The Comers is open to propo-
The Comers can be sekoored to
Vtor admiuistrnshen, or it kin bo
i Itoen into an attitood uv defiance.
It hezbin sed thatyoo are a sphinx,
"ht a sphinx is I don’t know, nor is
there any one in the Corners who does,
■'tit it must be suthin ojus, or yoo
u "‘»dn’t hev bin so called. The great
‘i'lesiion is, “are you agoin to contin
.'"o to play sphinx?’’ Are yon agoin
1,1 continyoo in the groove into wich
- yoo hev sot yoorself, or flop out, and
1 fling yourself into our arms ? That’s
the question that’s agitatin me and the
Corners ez well. y
Es I remember aright, the conclood
. in Acntcqc<e ny jmui- litter uv aocepfr
ance wuz, “let ns her pence!” I want
0 peece and so duz the Corners. How is
3 this peeCe to be attainod ? Easy enuff.
5 Let Deekin Pogram hev his niggers to
- manage and control in his own way,
and he’ll be at poece. Con tiny oo Elder
r Pennibacker—who hez a distillery—in
’ the offises uv whisky inspector, as-
J sessor and collector uv internal revo
uoo, wich he now holds, and he’ll con
' tinyoo at peece. Yoo can thus pacify
’ these classes. Don’t say that perhaps
1 the other classes mite object! Possi
bly they wood. It’s their objection
that hez made all the trouble thus far.
Hed they not objected] all wood hev
- bin at peece naw. The niggers, like
: the eel, hev been yoost to bein skinned,
and more uv it wont hurt ’em. But
think uv that old man, Deekin Po
gram ! Look at his gray hair, his fur
rowed cheeks, and his totterin steps !
Is he to be forced in his old age to
stane his hands with labor for the
necessary sustenance wich, sence Bas
com quit trustin, kin only be got with
cash. Is niggers to wear better clothes
than me ? Shel Issaker Gavitt, who
wuz never yoost to work, be brot to it
in the flower uv his yooth ?
We don’t ask you to interfere in our
behalf—we only ask you to be at peece
yeprself, and keep hands off. Sheathe
the sword and let us hev peece. With
draw everything in the shape of sol
jery—stick to the Presidency and
nothing else, and we will take care uv
the rest.
There are Other things wich yoo
must do to restore happiness and peace
to this distracted country. There
can be no peace so long ez the Blairs
are out of oflis. The Blairs must hev
places. A Government without a
Blair into it is not legal. Linkin failed
to command the respect uv the Blairs,
and where is Linkin? Johnson let the
Blairs go, and what ;m Awful Exam
ple is he ! Don’t be afraid that they
won’t take offis under yoo. They
arn’t pertickeler. They’d as soon run
yoor administraaheu ez ennybody’s.
Yoo can git the support uv the Blairs.
That Boon is within yoor reach. And
likewise yoo can git others, which is
jest ez necessary. Steedman is waitin.
Rosso is waitin. Fuller is waitin.
Ross, uv Kansas, and Doolittle—in
fact, all that noble army uv marters
wich follered the politikel forchoons
uv A. Johnson stnna rendy to support
yoo on condishun that you support
them. Take them, IT. S. Grant—take
them. Don’t dispise my advice. Think
uv bavin the Blair family knockin at
yoor door for four yeers ! End it now
and forever.
For myself it isn’t necessary to
speek. lam almost at the end uv a
eventful life. Disappointment hez
done its work, and in a little time I
shel go hence. lam a victim uv irre
gular habits—wunst when in a ablishen
basteel I wuz deprived uv liker for
ten days, and wunst by mistake I swal
lowed camphene for whisky. My con
stitoosheu wuz thus undermined. I
hev but few years more at best, and it
don’t matter where I drag them out.
But if nty pathway to the toomb cood
be smoothed by a continyuance in the
postoffice at the Corners, it wood boa
favor wich I shood appreciate. I shood
then be at peece. Likewise wood
Bascom, at whose bar I hev an un
liquidated account, and the citizens,
all uv whom hold my notes uv hand
for small be at peace in the
soothin hope uv gettin suthin at some
fucher day. I ekko yoor sentiment —
let uv hev peece. I hev indicated how
it kin be done—will yoo follow’ that
path or not ? It is for yoo too choose.
