SUNDAY JAN 23. 1«*«
—OnSSRVATIONg KxTHAORniNAWY.—
Washington pupers furnish the following
minutes of Senator Williams' “ Southern
t,,iir of observation:” “He left Wash*
iegton on Saturday, Dec. 22, and
reached Richmond Saturday night.
Left Richmond Sunday evening, and
made his report next Monday morning
in Washington to Forney's Chronicle.
This illustrates the speed with which a
man who has made tip his mind before
hand, can ascertain ‘the popular senti
ment of the Southern people. ”
Probably the gentleman had a large
spyglass.
—On Saturday night the Hon. Charles
Sumner had a box sent to him at his
rooms, which, on opening, he found to
contain a human finger, accompanied
by a note in the following, words:
“You old son of a , I send you a
niece of your friend’s finger. If your
bill passes, I will have a piece of your
body. A Union Man.”
No clue has been discovered whereby
to trace this strange missive to its origin.
Washington Chronicle.
—There are now about five thousand
families in St. Louis, applicants for
charity at the hands of the Provident
Association.

AVGUSTA, Ga.
(SPECIALLY AND EXCLUSIVELY OPTICAL),
This is the only properly constructed
office in the South where accurate and minute
measurements and adjustments, optically, can
be made, upon which depends the proper
treatment, and hence preservation of sight.
Is it wise to ruin permanently the eyes to
save a few dollars, or a short walk up town
to the “Optical Djcpot?” Do you choose
medicines without judicious advice? Equal
ly absurd to choose your Spectacles. lam
impressed that the evils resulting from the
injudicious use of Spectacles suld by mer
chants or charlatans, ought to be remedied
by law, unless the seller can prove before a
Medical Board his competency in this Speci
alty. Alas, many learn this truth only too
late. Born in your midst, the total loss of
one eye necessitated this study for fnearly
twenty years, and the entire proceeds of ar
duous tabor for that period has been sunk in
bends of my couutry, upon a Arm and unal
terable conviction of right. Hence I have
no regret, though compelled by force of cir
cumstances, under great disadvantages, to
elect this profession for support, not envy
ing any man who eame out of this war full
or //'handed. I shall prosecute it with
strict reference to consiencwns duty, und its
uses to this community.
