Good Jokk on West Point.—We
boar that West Point engineering bos
come to grief. The labor of fifty soldiers
has been employed tor a year past tu
building anew dock of stone some two
hundred yards further down the river
than the old one. Along the water’s
edge, too, with great labor, a road of crit
stone has been built, and the whole up.
dertaking wanted~onTy a lew weeks of
completion. It has been the abhorrence
of the soldiers, for it has been a kind of
“galley work” imposed upon them as
punishment. It has been to the super
intendent, Gen. UulTom, as “the apple
o(bis eye,’’ and he has personally super
intended it. Having finished she stone
wall, earth was put behind it, and as the
foundation was a shelving rock, when
the earth became moist it acted like a
wedge, and every one was amazed, and
not a little pleased, one day last week, to
find the whole affair non est, gonedJown
the river, and scarcely a trace left of a
year's labor and s2o,ooo.— Hartford.
Post.
A Beautiful Comparison.— lt is so
natural for Governor Brownlow to give
utterance to sentiments that could not
proceed from the thoughts or lips of a
gentleman (says the Charleston Daily
News, 20th instant), that his notorious
blackguardisms are taken as a matter of
course; but, in a speech, recently de
livered at Nashville, he has so far ex
celled himself that he has really suc
ceeded in exciting some surprise. Gov
ernor Brownlow, in alluding to the fact
that the workings of the Freedman’s
Bureau had failed to give universal sat
isfaction, actually went so far as to poke
fgti at the Saviour of mankind. We
quote the blasphemous passage:
“ If our blessed Saviour were to eome to
David-on county, with shoulder strips on,
and three or four stars on his shoulder, and
briu-r w-th him a military sti.fr of the old
Apostles be could not give satisfaction to
tb-lhe rebels of Davidson county.”
Wcdouot think it likely that-such a
thing should tome to pass, but deem it
much more probable that his infernal
majesty, the Devil, w*pay a visit in
that direction in search ot old Brownlow,
who would undoubtedly make a first
rate chief of staff, even for the Devil
himself.
• ,
Bound to Commit Suicide. —A man
named Henry Deitrich, living on Michi
gan street near Sycamore, had a slight
misunderstanding with his better half
one day this week, says the Buffalo
Commercial, in consequence of which
he was arrested, and taken before the
Police Court. Owing to the trivial na
ture of the offense, be was let off with
a fine of two dollars. The circumstance
so weighed upon Henry's mind that he
resolved to take his own life. He went?
home, procured a rope, attached one end
to a beam in the woodshed, belayed the
other eml around his neck, kicked the
bucket—we mean the flour barrel—from
under him, and there he was ? He hung
until, according to our informant, “he
was black in the face,” where he was
discovered by a friend and cut down.
So badly, however, did he “want to he
an angel,” that lie again resorted to the
rope. He was again discovered and re
leased. He afterwards tried to suspend
himself by the neck with a sheet; but
here again he was balked in his design
by the interposition of friends. He then,
being somewhat exhausted by his *ef
foris, went to bed, when he attempted to
blew his brains out and his head off with
a revolver. He placed the muzzle of the
loaded weapon in his mouth and snapped
away several times, but as he had ne
glec-ted the essential part of placing caps
upon the tubes, ot course he couldn't
shoot, and at last accounts was still
Alive. It is said that a “wilfu’ man
maun hae h ; s way,” and we do not. see
why Mr. Deitrich should be deprived of
his rights and privileges. He should he
provided with a keg of powder and a
C"-il of fire, and allowed to enjoy him
aelf.

DENNIS’ PAIN KILLER, OR STIM
ULATING LINIMENT—For the
convenience of those who may wish to give it
a trial, a few directions are given for its use
that cannot be given on the label.
In Cramp Colic , Cholera 3/nr bun. or Serere
Pain in the Stomach or Botcels. a doze
should be taken every five, ten, or twenty
minutes, or as often as may be foun.i neces
sary. The more severe the pain the larger
should he the dose and the more frequently
repealed. The bowels should he bathed
with it freely, over the region of the pain.
Should this fall to relieve, a warm poultice
should he applied, and a warm cnciua given.
In mo*l rases of cramp colic the stomach
and bowels are in a morbidly acid condition.
The alkali, a.-sociated with this medicine,
neutralizes the acid; the other ingredieuts
tend to relieve the inflammation or pain.
tlf the stomach is in an irritable condition,
it may cause vomiting, which will afford
more speedy relief, especially in flatuleut
colic.
