A Distressing Cask.—A man by the
name of Wilton came to this city some
years ago, says the Richmond Dispatch
of the 16th, aud became a sergeant in
the Public Guard. About two years since
he engaged the affections of a very young
and amiable girl, residing near the canal*
married her, and became the father of
children. Some time before the surren
der, he concluded to go North, under the
pretext oT making a better provision for >
his family. Leaving his young wile
with her aged mother, to battle with
poverty as best she might, he succeeded
in running the blockade, and turned up
in New York, whence he wrote most
affectionately, and gave very flattering
accounts of his business, and since the
surrender made his business an apology
for not returning. His wife, believing
his statements implicitly, felt, neverthe
less, an irresistible impulse to go on to
see him ; but having lost every thing by
the fire in April last, was unable to go.
Nothing daunted, she, with her mother,
worked most industriously aud earned
money to make the trip. On
reaching New York, judge of her sur
prise and distress to find that her hus
band had a wile and four children with
prior claims upon her—he being a mar
ried man before coming to Virginia.
The poor woman, with a crushed
heart, m de this melancholy announce
merit to her mother, from whom, with
the aid of friends, she received money
enough to return home, when she was
taken down, seemingly without any posi
tive disease, and pined away until death
ended her sorrows. She was yesterday
committed to an early grave.
Wilton, we believe, during his resi
dence here, bore a good character, but
hy this act has brought upon himself an
eternal weight of infamy.
