WfiDNE&DAY So KNIKG, J A N 81,1808
THE LAY OF THE DIET.
DY JOB If BROUGHAM.
[The inimitable John must have paid
our city a visit recently, else he conld not
have discoursed so Hood- like.j
With gaiters of exquisite ton,
And garments exceedingly neat,
Allured by the treacherous sun,
A lady stepped into the street.
Tramp, tramp, tramp.
•She daintly held up her skirt,
But tho mud was over the instep and vamp,
As she sang the soug of the dirt.
The sewers and gutters are closed,
The omnibus lumbers along,
The sweepers are (not) plying their brooms,
And the lady continues her song;
With very commendable pride,
She tries to look dainty and pert,
But she vainly endeavors her temper to
hide
As she sings the song of the dirt.
Mud, mud, mud.
For nothing but mud was around !
Mud, mud, mud, #
You could scarcely fathom or sound,
Mud from each omuibus wheel
Aorosß the pavement would spirt,
And savage the lady began to feel.
As the sang tho song of the dirt.
With gaiters all tattered and torn,
And petticoats notorer neat,
With dress all spattered and worn,
The lady stepped out of the street.
HI, uncommonly ill, ,
While with remarkably curt,
Her husband thought of the milliner’s bill,
And finished the song of the dirt.
