—The Hibernian Society of Peters
burg has been re-organized, and A. M.
Kelly, Esq., elected as President.
—There are ten hundred and fifty-one
students in the University of Michigan.
It is the largest in the country.
—A woman in Pennsylvania has pe
titioned for a divorce “because she and
her husband do not agree on politics.”
—A whole village in Upper Hessia,
Germany, is reported to have sold out,
and will remove to Missouri in the spring
—The harbor at Halifax, Nova Scotia,
is ice-bound from the Basin to the Beach
and is likely to continue so for some
time to come.
—Edward S. Irving, cashier, in the
Boston Post Office for nearly thirty-six
years, and a much esteemed citizen, died
on Monday in that city, aged 71.
—The Asia brings intelligence that
the habeas corpus has been suspended
in Ireland by the Royal authority. There
has been many arrests.
—lt was reported that the Emperor of
Austria had expressed a willingness to
furnish Maximilian with troops in case
they were incorporated into the Mexican
army and their expenses paid.
—A dog, which hud lost the whole of
her interesting family, was seen trying
to poke a piece of crape through the
handle of the.door of one of the sausage
shops in Rochester.
A caucus of the radicals in Congress
has appointed a committee of one from
each State having representation toraise
money and distribute documents to the
people.
—A Virginian, stopping at Barnum’s,
Baltimore, was, on Friday, swindled out
of §4OO by the confidence game. It
was borrowed on a bogus check of $1,300..
—Speaking of the “undeveloped
wealth of the country,” a loafer said
that was exactly his position ; he pos
sessed vast resources—was very rich—
but his wealth was undeveloped.
—“Johnny, how many cakes did you
liave on Christmas ?” “Five ; first a i
sponge cake, then an almond cake, then
a current cake, then a sweet cake, aud
then a stom-a cake 1”
; —A fire occurred in Baltimore on the
evening of the 23d ult., during which a
family of five persons were burned to
death, their escape having been cutoff!
by the flames.
—The Herald says the groat purpose
of Secretary SewardVreeept West India |
trip was to arrange a naval station in
the West India Islands, and that he has
secured for tjiat purpose a good harbor
in the Danish Island of St. Thomas.
—A spirited lady recently caught her
worser hall in the act of breaking up her
hoops. The exertion or something else
had a singular effect upon hitn. His
hair came out at a most astonishing
rate.
—Rev. W. F. Robins, a Methodist
minister at Culpepper C. IL, Va., writes
that all the churches in that place were
nearly ruined during the war, and that
the Methodist congregation is compelled
to worship in the open air. Aid is re
quested for building anew Church.
—The sober second thought is said to
be working upon many of the radicals in
Congress. Letters arc pouring in upon
them, warning them that they will be un
horsed in the issue with the President.
A good many are going home to
rest and reflect, and all are sorely
troubled and wear long faces.
—Some singular fatalities were recent
ly recorded in London. A girl died of
“cholera morbus,” accelerated by a “clot
of blood in the heartan engineer died
ot “hemorrhage, from the brachial artery
severed by the glass of skylight;” and
another man died from “thrombus of the
basilar artery.”
—As Evansville, Ind., a disease is
prevailing having a malignant character_
which some of the physicians call small
pox, others chicken pox. and others,
again, the measles. The doctors in that
vicinity must he possessed of unusual
penetrative powers. The diversity of
opinion would be of tittle importance if
the patients recovered ; but most of them
die.
—A terrible tornado is represented to
have passed over the city of Knoxville,
Tenn., at five o'clock Saturday morning.
The roofs of the depot and machine shop
of the Virginia Rail Road, and of the
round-house of the Georgia Rail Roai
were blown off, some thirty or mor*
houses were blown down, and a larg4
amout of other property destroyed. N*
loss of life, howerer, is reported.
—A Revenue Inspector at Cincinnati
has written to the Gazette of that city s
letter of interest to cigar and tobacc*
manufacturers. He says that cigar ant
tobacco,boxes, when used a second time*
must have the original United State*
revenue brand obliterated, otherwise th«
manufacturer is liable to a penalty oi
three hundred dollars for each box bear*
ing the old brand. The same penalty
applies to whiskey brands.
—They are having lively times in the
Legislature of Tennessee. There is a
radical majority, and the minority, as a
last resort, are resigning in order to
destroy a quorum and defeat the infa
mous franchise bill. Fifteen member,
had resigned up to Monday night, and
no quorum could be had. The radicals
are advocating the doctrine that the re
maining members constitute a quorumi
and they will probably go to work on
that principle.
