LOCAL MATTERS.
Aurora Bork.vi.is. —A beautiful ex*
hibition of the phenomena of the Aurora
Borealis, or Northern Rights, was seen at
Lynchburg on Friday morning. The ,Y«tr«
says: About midnight the Northwestern
horizon was illuminated with a hazy, yellow
clowd. of a deep color, towards the horizon,
and growiug lighter as it neared the upper
edge, the sky presenting somewhat the ap
pearance of daybreak. From the upper
part of the cloud brilliant streams of light
shot up in columnar form, changing in color
and intensity until reaching the zenith,
where they divided and crossed each other,
presenting the appearance of waves oflight.
The phenomena was of a remarkable charac
ter, on account of the number of columns or
streams oflight which flashed from thehuri
sun at the same. It is very rarely that
over five columns are witnessed, but on this
occasion sheets oflight shot simultaneously
from the north, northwest and north-eastern
horizon, to the number of eight or ten, as
suming every imaginable shape.
Ik the notice of the robbery of Mr.
W. W. Hangbton, published yesterday, the
amount should have been $765, instead of
$1,500. The loss is rather a serious one to
Mr. Haughton, being a gentleman of frugal
ity and industry. The manner of the
robbery was cunningly devised and execu
ted : Two negroes went into Mr. llaughton's
gun shop, on Ellis street, with the supposed
intention of having some repairing done to
a pistol, and while one engaged Mr. H.’s at
tention the other robbed his drawer. One
of them was subsequently arrested, carried
before a Jti.tice, and, ofcourse, jot juntice(f)
Coksigkes per Steamer L. Enos.—

Advertising Births. The spicy
local editor of the Denver Newt, Captain
George West, thus announces an “increase”
in his family:—Ye local has learned the
matrimonial rule of subtraction—take one
from two and three remains. The millitary
passion hying strong in him, he discourseth
of the eveut thnsly :
Morning Report.— The morning report of
company ‘W’ stood as follows this morning:
For duty, 2 ; si*-k, 1 ; total, 6. Total last
report, 2 ; gain, 1. Remarks:—One from
duty to sick ; one recruit from depot. It is
a girl; weighs 8 lbs. 9 oz.
Auction Salks. —It will be seen by
an advertisement in another column, that
Heyward A Sons intend having regular sale
days hereafter. These gentlemen are per
fectly responsible, and consignors may feel
secure in having their interest subserved by
entrusting business to their care.
Theatre. — “Ten Nights in a Bat-
Room,” which was received with such un
bounded applause on Monday night last,
will be repeated by particular request this
evening. It is from the great moral story
of that name by the popular author, T. S.
Arthur.
To-morrow evening, Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
Boswell will take a benefit.
Sundries. —W. Henrv Warren adver
tises a list of good things and useful articles
in another column. Look over it, and if
you want any of them go andsee Mr. Warren
and supply yourself. You will find him at
175 and 171 Broad street.
Money Saved is Money Made.—
That is what Davidson A Cos , 210 Broad
street, say ; and to verify it, we advise our
readers in want of lamps and kerosene oil to
give them a trial.
Tenant and Boarders Wanted.—
See the advertisement under this head, and
if it applies to you, reader, apply at this
office for further particulars.
Free Lunch. —Don’t forget the free
lunch at the St. Nicholas, at 11 o’clock to
day. Something good on band.
—By different nations, every day in
the week is set apart for public worship.
Sunday, by the Christians; Monday, by
the Grecians : Tuesday, by the Persians;
Wednesday, by the Assyrians; Thurs
day, by the Egyptians; Friday, by the
Turks, and Saturday by the Jews. Add
the fact of the diurnrl revolution of the
earth, giving every variation of longitude
a different hour, and it becomes appa
rent that every moment is Sunday some
where.
—At Binghampton, last week, one
Catharine Mc-Dougal stole from L. L.
Olmstead, $1,400, and secreted the
money in her waterfall, where it was
found several days afterwards by a con
stable. Catharine doubtless intended to
make her waterfall both useful and orna
mental.
New Books.
Tht Vrttite <tf t*« Alabama and tk» Sumter,
From the private journals and other
papers of Commandsr R. Semraes, C. S.
N., and other Officer*. Two volume* in
une. New York, Carloton, Publisher, 413
Broadway ; Loudon, Saunders Otley A
Cos., 1864.
We are indebted to Messrs Quinn Bros.,
for a copy of this work. It is compiled
from the private journals and other papers
of Captain Seiumes and other officers of tbo
Alabama and Sumter, and is a highly inter
esting narrative of the exploits of these two
renowned vessels.
Anything of a historical character, con
cerning the late war must be read with gen
eral interest ; but any information concern
ing the Navy of the late Confederate States
(“so called”) will he sought after with more
avidity, wc should think, by the Southern
people, at least, as they were able to glean
but very meagre particulars concerning
their vessels during the war. The work
before us will meet this desire in a measure,
as it appears to be a tolerably full and accu
rate account of the career of the two most
renowned Confederate cruisers. It is well
written, neatly printed and substantially
bound; aad can bo purchased at the Lite
rary Depot of Messrs Quinn Bros. It will
repay a perusal, and servo as a book for
future reference. Get a copy.
—ls I were-asked to account for my
horses’ legs and feet being in better
order than those of my neighbor, 1
should attribute it to the four following
circumstances: First, they are all shod
with a few nails, so placed in the shoe
ns to permit the foot to expand every
time they move: second that they all
live in boxes instead of stalls, and can
move whenever they please : third, they
spend two hours, daily, walking exercise
when they are not at work ; and fourth
that I have not a headstall or track
chain in my stall. These four circum
stances comprehend the whole mystery
of keeping horses’ legs fine, and their
feet in sound working condition up to
old age.
—A reverend sportsman was once
boasting of his infallible skill in finding
a hare. “If” said a Quaker, who was
present, “I were a hare, I would take
my seat in a place where I should be
sure of not being disturbed by tbee from
the first of January to the last of De
cember.” “Why, where would you go ?”
“Into thy study. ’
—An impudent burglar in New York
carrying oft' some plunder, dropped a
package in the street. He coolly asked
and obtained the assistance of two police
men to help him pick up his booty,
thanked them apd walked oft'.
—A Paris letter in a Loudon journal
says : Rather a good thing was uttered
here the other night by a clever, actress.
Avery old man having died, his very
old and attentive servant died the next
day. “Depend upon it, his master rang
for him,” was the remark.
—A man named Quigley dropped dead,
as supposed, last Sunday, at Norwalk,
Conn. While shaving him,preparatory for
the grave, his face was cut with the razor,
when the blood flowed and he quickly
arose, put on his garments and went on
his business like a live man.

Third series—
EDITED BY
JOBEPH JUNKS, M. I).
Professor of Medical ChtmUtry in the Medical
College of Georgia , at Augusta; and
formerly Surgeon in the
J\ovi»ional Army of the Confederate States.
The SOUTHERN MEDICAL ami SUR
GICAL JOURNAL, 6f Augusta, Georgia,
was established iu 1836, by the late Professor
Milton Antony, the illustrious founder of
the Medical College of Georgia, and has al
ways commanded the respect and patronage
of the Profession, not only as one of the
oldest and largest American Periodicals,
but chiefly by those valuable original com
muoicatiois, contributed by the most emi
nent, scientific men and practitioners of tho
Southern States, which have enriched its
pages during the past thirty years. The
volumes already issued, embrace over six
teen thousaud \losely printed pages, con
taining more than six hundred original
communications from professional men
throughout the Southern States, besides an
immeuse number of valuable articles, select
ed from its ample list of American and
foreign exchanges.
During the recent civil war, thq publica
tion of the SOUTHERN MEDICAL AND
SURGICAL JOURNAL was necessarily sus
pended. At the close of a bloody and dis
astrous war, which has ended in the destruc
tion and surrender of the Southern armies,
and in the destruction aud capture of the
archives of the Confederate Government, and
of the immense stores of medical facts and
observations accumulated by the Medical
Officers of the Confederate Army, under the
direction of their intelligent and efficient
Surgeon General, it is believed by medical
meu of the highest standing in this section
of the South, that it is important to estab
lish at this time a Medical Periodical of
sufficient size to furnish ample room for the
publication of the valuable experience of the
Medical Officers of the late Confederate
Anuy.
It will be the earnest effort of the Editor
to sustain the former usefulness of this
Journal as a medium for the communica
tion of the discoveries and advancing doc
trines of science and of all the departments
of Medicine, and of the facts and discove
ries tending to develop the material pros
perity of the South, and especially of the
valuable Medical statistics and observations
of the recent disastrous revolution.
In view of the good accomplished in times
past by the publication of the SOUTHERN
MEDICAL AND SURGICAL JOURNAL,
the Editor feels no hesitation in urging its
claims unon its former patrons and friends.
The SOUTHERN MEDICAL AND SUR
GICAL JOURNAL will be issued every
TWO MONTHS, commencing Ist of July,
1866, and each number will contain ONE
HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-SIX PAGES
of printed matter, (octavo); tho yearly
publication will therefore number Oue
Thousand and Fifty-six pages, and be equal
in size tb the largest American and Euro
pean Journals.
