LOCAL MATTERS.
A Praisewokthy Move.— The resolu
tion of Or. Swinney.iti the Council on Thurs
day eveuing last, to provide suitable head
boards to bo placed at the graves of the
Confederate dead in the City Cemetery, is
one which does credit to the* heart of the
mover, and commends itself to the favorable
consideration of all our citizens. Numbers
of gailaut heroes lie slumbering beneath the
sod in that quiet City of the Dead, with no
memento of gratitude or atfcctiou to mark
their resting place, save the uuuies and
number# upon the stakes which have been
placed there by the kindly hand of the noble
hearted Sexton, and a few shrubs planted
by one of tbo fair daughters of our goodly
city. Something more should bo done.
Suitable bead boards, with name, age and
place of residence, as fur as possible, should
be placed at each grave, so that relatives
and friends, who seek the remains of the
loved aud the lost, might experience no dif
ficulty in finding* them, and, also, as a
tribute of respect to those who lost their
lives iu our service. We are glad that
Council has moved in the matter: and the
committee having it in charge, we feel sure,
will lose no time in performing the duty
entrusted to them. As soon as they report,
Couucil will in ike the necessary appropria
tion and the work will be promptly and
properly done.
The Georgia Immigration Company.
—The stockholders of this Company will j
bear in mind that the election for officers
will rake place this day at the office of Jacob
R. Davis <fc Sons, 292 Broad street.
If there beany who desire to take stock j
in this company, and have not vet dono so,
they should not neglect the opportunity
longer. The great necessity of the South
is labor which cau be depended upon, to till
its soil, run its manufactories, work its ma
chine shops, amt, in short, develop its great
resources. Thi* labor can be best obtained
by encouraging immigration. The compa
ny to which wo have alluded will do this*
It, therefore, becomes the interest of the
farmer, the manufacturer and the mechanic
and all who need additional labor, to aid in
the organization of the company, either by
subscriptions to its stock, or by availing
themselves of its advantages by obt lining
assistance through its facilities. Do not
forget, then, that the election of officers
takes place to-day
Blobbs Hears the Italian Lan
guage Spoken.—While Blobos was at the
Internationa! the other day, “smiling” at
the gentlemanly proprietor, be saw a mem
ber of the Ituliuu Opera Troupe enter, and
heard him say to the bar keeper, what
Blobbs took to be, the vrorde, “Yobbider
Yobster Oo!”
“Did j'ou speak ?” queried the manipu
lator of bibulous compounds.
“Yobbider Yobster Oo !’’ replied the song
ster.
“I don’t understand you, sir,” 6aid tbo
polite bar keeper.
Then turning tQ a son of the Emerald
Isle “behind the bar,” the s.ngiSt again ex
claimed, “Y’obbider Yobster Oo!” at the
same time going through a multitude of
motions to aid him iu convoying hia mean
ing.
“Och ! the divil fly away wid the frying
pan, but it’s inesclf that don’t understand
yes, ye old haythen, ye ! wid yer ‘yobber
jobbery oo!’
“Oh, ah, sair,” now becoming impatient,
and turuing 10 a Teutoric gentleman, the
songster again essayed to make hiinsel 1
understood, “Yobbider Yubster O *!”
“Ich cannicht fursia,” slowly drawled out
mynheer, astonished at the strange lan
guage addressed to him.
Finally, iu despair of making himself
understood, the man of music addressed
himself to an intelligent member of the
Freedman’s sideboard, “Yobbider Yobster
Oo r
“Ki! Marser, I don’t know what dat
mean, for ehure,” replied young Africa,
displaying a line set of ivory with a broad
grin.
Blobbs, with his usual characteristic be
nevolence, now fiudiug it impossible for any
one to relieve the unhappy opera-tor,
rushed up stairs into the Hall aud procured
a “libretto” of the evening’s Opera, read it
all tbiough to the astonished Italian, and
finally discovered that he wanted to say
“Have you any oyster soup?”
.Mine host replied that he would have
some in five -minutes.
Well, call ’gain,” said the Opera man—
going out, doubtless satisfied at his profi
ciency in the English language, and fol
lowed by Blobbs humming, li Eh Ci ca»a
buona gente !*'
A Minister frequently gets a few dol
lars for tying a knot which a lawyer gets
thousands for untying. It is worth more
to have a thing undone sometimes than it is
to it dona.
Called Meeting ok Cockcil.—There '
was a callod meeting of Counc I, on Thors- I
day evening last, to ratify the revised tioner- j
al Ordinance of the City. The Ordinaooc, !
as amended, was read and adopted.
On motion of Mr. Fhinixy, a special com
mittce of four was appointed to revise and
correct tho rates of wharfage, vis.: Messrs.
Fhinixy, Foster. Platt and Swinney.
On motion of Mr. Swinney, a special com
mittee off ur was appointed to ascertain the
cost of providing suitable headboard- fur the
Confederate dead, in the City Cemetery—to
report to the next meeting of Council. The
Mayor appointed the following, as that
committee, vix.: Messrs. Swinney, Foster,
Denning and Phillips.
A petition from A. F. Burnett, of Atlanta,
and L. B. Davis, of Augusta, to run some
ice through the city by Rail Road cars, was
laid on tlje table.
A com ip unirat ion from N. K. Bavnum,
relative to lost Bonds of the City of Augusta,
W4S read. The Clerk of Council was iu
structed to notify him to comply with the
law in regard lo cases.
The Mayor called the attention of CouneH
to the subject of Rail Itoa 1 connections in
the city, which was deferred until the next
regular meeting of Council.
‘•The Blenkekhashett.” Every

apt to enquire for the “Bleunerlmssett Che

of Still Waters Run Deep, and a roaring
farce will constitute the entertainment, a
very attractive bill, surely. Those who
want, good seats can secure them at Schrei

Sundries. —Our friend J. 0. Mat
thowson advertises, this morning, a great
variety of articles such «s axes, oat«, cot
ton s*»ed. liquors of all kind#, canned fiuits,
and vegetables, and a number of other
things, to all of which we invite the espeem
attention of housekeepers and dealers
generally.
Origin of Dixte. —Our Musical Ed
itor has made a great discovery. Ho thinks
that the popular air of “Dixie” is founded
upon tlie Cavatina—“Eh di casa buona
gente,” hi “The Barber of Seville.” Try it,
and see if it isn’t so.
Furnished Room Wanted. —A fur

his wife. Any persons having one to rent
will oblige us by making the same known at
