AUGUSTA, GA., WEDNESDAY MORNING, MARCH 14, 1866. VOL. I. (Tbr iteiig sjrtss! THE LARGEST IWFLATION. WEDNESDAY MORNING..March 14, 1866 Contrast Poems. With a belief in the maxim, that va riety is the spice of life, and thinking that the variety of politics just now is beyond the spices, and fully up to the pepper and the cayenne ; we dilute the fire and irritation of our second page and the stealing list, with the following sweets : The first breathes of that peace “Which nothing earthly gives, Or can destroy.” OVER. THE RIVER. Over the River they Keek on to me, Loved ones whc’ve passed to thq others ; de; The gleam of their snowy robes I see, But their voices are lost in the dashiudttde. There’s one with ringlets of sunny And eyes the reflection of Heuvuu's own blue; He crossed in the twilight gray and cold, And the pale mist hid him from my view. We saw not the angels who met him there, The gates of The City we could not see ; Over the River, over the River, My brother stands ready to welcome me. Over the River the Boatman pale, Carried another, the household pel; Her bright ourls waved in the gentle gale, Darling Minnie, I see her yet! She crossed on her bosom her dimpled hands, And fearlessly entered the phantom bark; We watched it glide from tho silver sands, And all our sunshine grew strangely dark. Wo know she is sate on the other side, Where all the ransomed and angels be ; Over the River, the mystic River. My childhood’s idols are waiting for me. For none return from those quiet shores Whocross with the Boatman cold and pale, We hear the dip of the golden oars. We catch a gleaui of the snowy sail. And lo! they have passed away fron our heart; They cross the stream and are gone for aye! We cannot sunder the veil apart, That hides from our vision the gates of day; We only know that their barks no more Shall sail with ours on life’s stormy sea; Yet somehow on the unseen shore, They watch and beckon and wait for me. And I sit and think when the sunset’s gold Is flushing river and hill and shore : 1 shall one day stand by the water e<dd, And list to the sound of the Boat man’s oar: I shall watch for the gleam of the flapping sail, I shall hear the boat as it gains the strand, I shall pass from sight with the Boatman pale To the better .-bore of tlie Spirit Land ; I shall know the loved who have gone before, And joyfully sweet will the meeting be, When over the River, the peaceful River, The Angel of Death shall carry me! The second poem is sSI as earth, and tells of a state as unhappy as— “ That settled, ceaseless gloom. The fabled Hebrew wander bore ; That will not look beyond the tomb, And cannot hope for rest before.” LIFE—IN TWO SCENES. SCENE I . “My home and heaven. Fill every corner of my heart.” In a neat and quiet cottage, Nestling in a bower of green, Lived a happy, calm contentment, Kate and ITarry lnniestien : Near their cot a streamlet rippled— Making music all the day, In the groves sweet warblers carroled Forth their joyous roundelay; Flowers iu rich profusion springing, Filled the air with fragrance sweet; And in unison with nature, Joyfully each bosom beat. With his wife and darling children, And his pretty cottage home, Harry fondly dreamed that sorrow, Pain nr care could never come, Wheu at night with step clastic, Cheerful heart and manly frame, Pleased to greet his household treasures, Harry from his labor came ; How they eager ran to meet him, With their little pattering feet; And Kate, with smile of love and gladness, Would his welcome presence greet. Well, he loved his little Alice— Like her mother, frail and fair. With those blue eyes, soft and meltiug, And her wealth of golden hair; And his Willie, bright and joyous, Playful as a child could be— Oft he wished that happy young heart Might from grief be free. Ah, tho gloomy dread of future ! Who may tell its coming woe 'I All the grief—the care and sorrow. That the burthened heart may know. scene ii. “Though error crossed like a blight o’er my heart, And left me a wreck to remorse and to shame. Are there no drops of pity the kind can impart. To wash out the spot that has sullied my name?” Years have passed above the cottage, Years with many changes fraught; Oh ! the woe, the bitter anguish, Time to this sweet home hath brought! Where is now the fair haired Alice, Once her father’s darling pet ? Where his pride and hope—his Willie? Ah ! our cheeks with tears are wet, As we view the unsightly hovel, Where poor Kate in sorrow dwells; And the penury around her, The sad tale of suffering tells. Faint with grief and cold and hunger, • Children once unused to want, Crouch around the grate so empty; All their clothing bare and scant. Hark! they bear the unsteady footsteps Os the father once so dear; Now in terror, how they hasten, Quick to hide in abject fear, While poor Kate begins with trembling, To prepare the unsavory food; Vainly hoping that her tyrant Seeks his home in pleasant mood. Now he staggers to the doorway— Soon begins the scene of strife— Heaping foul abuse, reproaches, On his meek and stricken wife, Ah ! the arm is raised to strike her, That should shield in its embrace, Tho frail flower so fondly clinging To its once dear resting place. Man ! has thou the soul of demon, Thus to poison all Life’s sweet ? Cast the hideous Serpent from thee— , Trample it beneath thy feet. Be again what God designed thee— Kind protector of our sex ; Not the steam, relentless tyrant, All our life to pain and vex; Let thy children call thee father, With a fond, confiding love ; And thy heart will own none truer, Only that of God above. * So shall be Life’s trials lightened, All thy griefs by love shared ; Darkost hours by joy be brightened, Aud thy soul for Heaven propared. —The Virginia Legislature adjourned sine die on the night of the 3d inst. Lieutenant Governor Cowper, in bis parting speech, declared that the people of the South were now more thoroughly loyal to the Union than the citizens of other parts of the republic. Mr. Baldwin, the Speaker of the House, made an im pressive farewell speech, iu which ho proclaimed strong Union sentiments. 4UGISTA HOTEL. TONES & RICE, J PROPRIETORS. - AUGUSTA, GA.
