Girard’s Secret. —Stephen Girard j
than whom no shrewder business man
ever lived, used to say in his old age :
“I have always considered advertising
liberally and long to be the greatest
medium of success in business, and the
prelude to wealth. And I have made
it an invariable rule, too, to advertise
in the dullest time as well as ih the
busiest, long experience having taught
me that money thus spent is well laid
out; as by keeping my business con.
tinnally before the public, it has se.
cured me many sales, that I would
otherwise have lost.”
—A young fellow at Pittsiield had for
some time been paying his attentions to
a young laly at Williamstown, and
recently, having obtained the consent of
the lady, as well as that of her parents,
the pair started for an adjoining town
to be made one. A clergyman was
called, and the marriage ceremony com
menced, when the almost bride required
a pledge that he would henceforth ab
stain front the use of all intoxicating
liquors as a beverage. The young man
refused to dash the cup from his lips, the
matrimonial cup of bliss, which might
have been his, was dashed instead. The
couple left the scene as they came, ex
cept, perhaps, he was a trifle sadder, and
she a trifle wiser. So says the Spring
field Republican. _
