THE LAB6EST CHtCI'LATION.
AUBUBTA, CAA..I
yTHURSDAY MORNING.. ..March IS, 1886
Ffenlanlsm.
We have already had our »ay on Fe
nianism, but that was adverse to it.
We look upon it, in common with most
of our Irish citizens, as one of the grand
est humbugs of the day ; and a fit sub
ject tor ridicule, if it were not for the
serious consequences resulting from it
to the unfortunate Irish at home. The
people of that country are a very suscep
tible, confiding race. They trust too
much to their leaders ; and wicked de
signing men, under the pretence of se
curing independence to Ireland, can
lead them into very serious difficulties.
A few Sundays ago, an immense mass
meeting of Fenians was held at Jones’
Wood, New York City; and,notwithstand
ing the admonitions of Archbishop Mc-
Closkey, the crowd was immense and very
enthusiastic. Some very fun ny things were
said about the Archhisbop’s admoni
tions ; but the funniest speech of all
was that of the Chief of the Fenian |
movement —one O’Mahonev —in brief)
“Owe Money,” which will be the upshot
of the whole movement. He was very
patriotic but rather more monetary. He
said : “We need means, money , arms
and armed men j" “I know from the
-generous enthusiasm that you all mani
fest, that the necessary means (that is
money) wili be furnished, and tha 1
promptly.” “Will you supply to the
Irish Republic * * * the means
and appliances (that’s money again)
necessary to establish its thorough inde
pendence ?” “I will again ask you to
furnish me with the grand essential, and j
the only essential, now for its perfect j
liberation —the sinews of war ’ (that’s
more money) ; “Buy the bonds of the
Irish Republic" (that’s still more
money); “supply the money,” (that's
plain English). “We only have one
thing to do—that is to raise the stan
dard of Ireland, as soon as you furnish
us with the means and sinews of war '
(and more money yet) ! “I will now
conclude by calling upon you to buy the
bonds (and still more money yet) of
the Irish Republic in yonder hotel
(that’s a queer place to keep a Repub
lic-in a hotel ; but we fear that it’s the
only place that the Irish Republic ever
will' be seen, and that “through a glass
darkly”) ; “to subscribe your funds to
the immediate necessities of the Irish
army, now in sore peril.” (a little more
money) 1 “Enable me, by the next ship,
to send a sufficient sum of money (very
good English and Irish, that!) to sup.
ply the immediate necessity of James
Stephens and his brave companions
“Will you furnish me with enough of
money (no misunderstanding, that!) to
supply the immediate necessity of James
Stephens and his brave companions
and finally, “Will you supply me, as the
agent of the Irish Republic, the Chief
of this errand organization, with sufficient
■money, for myself and brother Fenians
to leave this country for ever, and fight \
for your native land ere six weeks j
expire ?”
Arrah ! My honey,
* How you do talk of money !
And faix! how ye did blarney the j
b’ys, Colonel 1 but ye had a good assist- j
tint in Captaiu McCafferty. That gentle
man, after saying that there were 300,-
000 men in the Irish army, urged his
hearers to buy some bonds, and. con
cluded by advising each man to do his ;
duty, which was, if he had but 25 cents j
to invest it. Onr advice, under similar !
circumstances, would be to let it stay in
his vest, if he had it there—that’s a bet- |
ter investment than punchasing worth
less bonds. But the Captain wag gener
ous. He was only willing to take all a
man had, and “divil a bit more.”
A Mr. Killian also made a speech—a
killin’ speech it was—chock full of fight;
but we haven’t any fears that there will be
much killin’ done by the Fenian leaders
on this side of the salt pond. Our only
fear is that some unfortunate dupes on
the other side may be.
But we have not time, nor do we de
sire, to follow the various speakers and
to record the full proceedings of this
great meeting at Jones' Wood. If Jones
wood we wouldn’t. We need only say >
that the extracts from the speech of the !
Head Centre, O’Mahoney, are a fair
sample of what was said on that occa
sion. Money was the burthen of most
of them; and no doubt many an honest
laborer was that day fleeced of his
week’s hard earnings, under the pretence
that it was to be devoted to the redemp
tion of his dear old Ireiarid.
Alas I in devoting his money to the
purchase of Irish Bonds, he was but
forging heavier bonds for his unfortunate
eountry. The Irish people of the South
will not bo so easily duped. Vive la
huntbuff!
