VOL. 3. (Lit 3Mg |lrrss. THE LARGEST CIRH LATIOX. SUNDAY MORNING March 18, lS6fi SCISSOR S V , —An Irishman recently stopped at a hotel out West pretty high bills were charged. In the morning the landlord made oat the amount of “dera nge,” and presented it to l’at. After he had glanced over it, the latter looked the landlord in the face and exclaimed, “\e put me in mind uv a snipe.” “Why ?” asked the landlord. “Debase ye're very nigh all bill.” —An old woman, aged 79, named Ann Winfry, was found dead in bed re cently in a miserable old hut containing one room, at Spriugthorpe, Lincolnshire. On a search made by the parish au thorities. a large quantity of clothes linen, etc., was found, which were subse quently offered by auction and realised about 112. Among the things sold were twenty gowns, more than half new, some never having been worn ; twenty two pairs of stockings, more than a dozen pocket handkerchief, a dozen night gowns ; also shawls, towels, sheets, flan nels, etc., in abundance. Deceased had been iu the receipt of parish relief for j nearly twenty years, nlthough, in ad dition to the above effects, she had fiftv two pounds in the Savings bank. For the last dozcii years she went about with scarcely any clothing upon her. —A rich occurrence has recently taken place in the city of St. Louis. A fancy, fashionable and fast young mar ried gentleman became enamored of a gay and glittering widow and sought to make a conquest of her, injurious to her character, outrageous to the wife of his bosom, and infamous to himself. The intended victim soon saw the drift of his intentions, and prepared a punishment for his audacity not equalled in the flays of the “Merry Wives of Windsor.” She apparently listened to the soft persua sions of his “winning voice,” and made an appointment to receive him at her house in the stilly hours of the night. “Heated,” like Lothario, “with the Tus can grade,” he stealthily repaired to the spot. Here, however, in praise he it said, the justly indignant lady had pre pared for him a reception different from that of his dreams. He was received and taken into a darkened parlor, with hushed whispers, carrying boots in hand. Left for a moment with‘the lone beat ing's of his heart, the lolding doors were thrown wide, admitting a flood of light, and exhibiting a c#owd of gentlemen and ladies, among whom was the wife whom he thought was unsuspectingly at his own home. The denounement of the scene is said to have been rich in the extreme, though the bootless knight remained but a few minutes to enjoy it. Street Etiquette. Some fair Georgian who evidently makes good use of her bright black eyes, reports the following rules for etiquette, which we cordially com mend to the careful consideration of the many prospective Chesterfields in the city : “1. Gentlemen in walking should keep their hands in their pockets. It shows their gait and figure to advantage, keeps the hands warm and out of other people’s pockets. “ 2. In the afternoon congregate in front of the hotels and gabions, and at the street corners. Then upon ladies passing, set up an equine cachiDation (translated horse laugh). This will be giving them an ex alted opinion of your taste and refinement. “J. Keep to the centre of the sidewalk. By this means others in meeting 3’ou will uot know which side to pass ; when they attempt it step in the same direction with them. This shows an agreeable variety in a promenade. / *‘4. If you see a person on the opposite side of the street whom *you wish to inter rupt, cry as loud as possible to him, *IIo ! Jones !' of course Jones will show to pas sers by that you take a great interest in the fate of Jones. “5. When turning a corner, walk rap idly and with your eves in an opposito direction. You may meet somebody, and give them an opportunity to study ‘astron omy by daylight.' ** 6* Dog fights are an agreeable variety with which to ‘spice' city life ; therefore encourage them by your presence, and get up a few bets as to which will win." A Mother’s Influence — How touch ing is this tribute of Hon. T. H. Benton to his mother's influence “Mv mother asked me never to use tobacco; I havo never touched it from that time to the present day. She asked mo not to game, and I have never gambled, and I cannot tell who is losing in games that arc being played. She admonished me, too, against hard drink- AUGUSTA, GA.,Si:YPA¥ MORYIYCi, MARCH 18, 1866. lug; ami what ever capacity for endurance 1 have at present, raid whatever nsef ulus 1 luav have attained in life, I have nttrihuted to having complied with her pious and cor rect wishes.
