THURSDAY MORNING March 22,1866 SCISSORS. —“Jake, spoil brandy with three let ters." “O-d-v” (eau de vie.) “No; in English.” “B-r-aiul-y.” —The Egyptian Government lias only just adopted the use of postage stamps ; they came into use on the first day of January. —A London firm began business on SGSO three years ago, and has just failed for over a million. Pretty fast for a slow country. —At Montgomery, Ala., a quantity of jewelry was recently found buried in the city cemetery. It included GO gold watches anil some valuable jewels. —The Emperer Napoleon’s recent speeeh, consisting of 1,78-1 words, was transmitted to the farthest part of France by telegraph in little over half an hour. —A Stark county (Ohio) butcher, who undertook to furnish his customers with "cheap meat,” by stealing cattle, has suspended business and is now rus ti§ating in the county jail. —Rev. Mr. Stebbins, having been hissed in San Francisco, turned upon bis assailant with, ‘‘l hear a hiss ; did ever a word of truth drop into the vor tfet of hell without sending up a hiss?' —Fifteen men were dreadfully burned by the sudden explosion of a pit of molten metal, in London, on the 12th ult., caused by a drop of x'ain failing in it through the skylight. —A discharged soldier, who stole a ride from Chicago to Petersburg, ln hiding in a pork ear among the dressed hogs, was locked in, and so remained for five days with no other food but th e ; raw pork. —A sou of Adam never feelS so proud I and great as when he first gets into pantaloons, and eau thrust his hands into his breeches pockets. It is confidently as- j sorted that the whereabouts of Stephens j himself will be discovered through their j instrumentality. —The will of Martha A. Metcalf, a j courtezan of Cincinnati, has been ad- j mitted to probate. She leaves consider- j able property to kinsfolk; and to her gentlemen friends, selections from watches, diamonds, jewelry, etc. —A popular merchant, says the Sunny South, having received a superb assort ment of waterfall cuttlery, was most anxious to attract the attention of his fair customers to its merits. “Can't I sell you a fine comb, madam ?” said he to a rural beauty who stood at his coun ter. “No, sir, thank your, sir,” respond ed the fair one in indignant tones: “thank you, sir, I don’t need anything of that kind.” The agitated damsel had evidently misconstrued the word “fine.” Too Many Peoplb.— The Cleveland Herald has the following: “A distressed correspondent in Ravenna sends us the following advertisement, which he paid for like a gentleman. We can sympa thize with him. Cleveland is in want of about 1,000 dwelling houses and 200 stores, and a few public spirited land holders : “Wanted, at Ravenna, Ohio; the following: 1. Anew hotel on the Prentiss corner. 2. Gasworks and light ed streets. 3. Fifty dwellings suitable for renting. 4. A few public spirited business men. For further particulars inquire of any one, hailing from the said town of Raven ua. Planting by the Moox. — An ex change says : “There are a greut many who ridicule the idea of planting by the moon ; but experience is wiser than science, and many of the most success ful gardeners observe rigidly the rule of planting according to the changes of the moon. An old friend, in whose judgment we have faith, assures us that all vegetables of the vine kind, as beans, peas, potatoes, etc., bear more luxuri antly if planted in the first three or four days alter full moon ; and that corn planted on the decline of the moon will make heavier years than if planted al any other time.
