across the Alabama at Selina.
—Alexander Dumas is coming to this
country on a lecturing tour.
—The Catholic churches in New York
i have lately contributed 510.429 70 for
the American college ii- Rome.
- The ladies of Charlottesville Va.,
are taking steps to establish a home for
the children of deceased and disabled
Confederate soldiers.
—An inveterate bachelor gives as a
reason for not getting married, that he
wishes to preserve his good opinion of
the gentler sex.
—Expet intent has determined that
petroleum may he advantageously used
for the generation of steam, but the pre
cise economic value of it its compared
with coal has not yet been settled, lull, so
far as determined, the superiority rests
with petroleum.
—The editor of a western paper re
marks : “We have adopted the 8-hour
system in this ollice. Wo commence
work at 8 o’clock in the morning, and
end work at 8 in the evening.
—Some ladies sprinkle their bus'
bands with tears in order that they may
sweep the cash out of their poo els—
just as people usually sprinkle the floor I
before sweeping it.
—A “professor,” named DeLacy, who
promises to cure everything on earth in j
the way of human ills, recently put up
in Evansville, Indiana, and after getting
$7,000 in advance from a number of
duped parties, suddenly decamped from !
that city with the money.
—A couple celebrated their silver
wedding in Vermont the other day, of j
whom it is said that they never exr hanged j
a harsh word during their wedded life ot
twenty-five years. The most incredul
ous will believe it when it is stated that
they are deaf mutes.
—Even the robber and the cut-thrnat
have their followers, who admire their
address and trepidity, their stratagems
of rapine, and their fidelity to the gang.
The liar, and only the liar, is invariably
and universally despised, abandoned, I
and disowned.
—A gold snuff box, presented bv
Louis XIV to Colonel John Laurens, of
South Carolina, aid-de-camp to General |
Washington, on the occasion of that i
officer s mission to France/by order of j
the American Congress, to negotiate!
a loan for his Government, has been j
sent to a jeweller in Baltimore by a j
widow lady, one of the descendants of j
Colonel Laurens, who has been impov
erished by the war. There are fifty- i
eight diamonds on the cover.
—A Salt Lake paper says : “We j
have information from good authority i
that the Mormon Hierarch recently i
announced in grand council, his until- j
terabie determination to stand or fall by j
polygamy. It was ordered that all ]
Church officials should forthwith be in- I
structed to promulgate this fact, and
urge by every means the entrance into
plurality at once of all persons who de
sired to hold good standing in the Church, j
Immediate compliance was to be re
quired, and those who failed or refused,
were to be informed that the Church
disowned them—all must become poly
gamists or be no longer recognized as
among the faithful—they must do this
for the sake of Brigham, or they were
not with him.
—A curious case has just been de.
cided in London. Col. Campbell sued
Lord Wenlock for 300 guineas, the rent
of a furnished house in that city from
the 22d of April to the Ist of August,
1865. His Lordship admitted taking
the house at the above rent, but said
that the servants’ rooms were found to
be infested with bed bugs. He there'
fore left the house immediately. The
Chief Justice summed up and told the
jury that the question for them to decide
was, whether the apartments were in
such a condition “as to render the rest
and comfort of the inmates impossible.”
The jury returned a verdict for the plain
tiff for the full amount of the rent, 500
guineas. So it is law in London that
any quantity of bed bugs in chambers
do not make n house untenantable for a
noble family.
