(LI)C pailii svrss. THE LARGEST CIRCULATION. SATURDAY MORNING March 24, 18(1(5 SCISSORS. —There are good hypocrites who are far better than they appear. —Butter and lard should not be kept in the same apartment with kerosene, as all fats readily absorb and retain odors, nnd the fine aroma of butter may thus he seriously insured. —A clerk in a music store was lately overpowered by a fastidious young lady, who wanted to purchase Mr. Thomas Hood s—a—song —of the —a—gentle man's undergarment! The clerk is still alive. —A dispatch from Galveston says an order has been issued to quarantine all vessels arriving at Texan ports, on ac count of official notice having been re ceived of the prevalence of the cholera in the West Indies. —On a recent trip of one of the Illi nois river packets—a light draughtone— the passengers were startled by the cry of a “man overboard 1” The steamer was stopped, and preparations made to save him, when the sound of his voice was heard, exclaiming, “Go ahead w ith your old steamboat! I’ll walk along bellin'! vou.” —There is a girl in Troy whose lips are so sweet that they stick together every morning by the honey they dis till, and she cannot open her mouth un til she has parted her lips with a silver knife. She will be a treasure to her husband, not only on account of lier sweetness, but because sire can occasion ally keep her mouth shut. —“Mother,” said little Ned, one morn ing, alter having fallen out of bed, “I think I know why I fell out of bed last night. It was because I slept too near where I got in.” Musing a little while, as if in doubt whether he had given the right explanation, he added: “No, that wasn’t the reason; it was because I slept too near where I fell out.” —An epidemic of the nature of the cattle disease in England, has appeared in Cuba. It is called the cangrena Large numbers of oxen have died within twenty-four hours after being attacked. When a beast dies the farmers watch the carrion crows, and if they do not immediately attack the body, brush and fuel are heaped up, and it is burned. No preventative of this disease is yet dis covered. There are always large num bers of green fiies about the carcases, and their bite is injurious, if not fatal to man. —The late Rev. Samuel Fiske (“Dunn Browne”) once prayed in the pulpit, “that, the Lord would bless the congre gation assembled, and that portion of it which was on the way to church and those who were at home getting ready to come, and that in His infinite pa tience, He would grant the benediction to those who reach the house of God just in time for that.” By this eccentric method the clergyman succeeded in breaking up a bad habit, which had resisted all legitimate appeals. —A Mr. Thompson, of West Virginia, recently a judge of the Wheeling dis trict,, has published a book. What its title and what its subject is no matter to the public, as we are sure our readers will acknowledge after reading the fol lowing lucid extract: “Man becomes the diaphanous ectype of the inner spiritual self, as he is moulded and molds his surrounding organism from instant to instant to their animalistic propensities, their human desires and purposes, and in his higher spiritual manifestations of autopsic willing, intellectualizing and loving.” • —A writer in a Mississippi paper in troduces the American Eagle, which for five years has been a comparative stranger in those parts, in this style, preliminary to the 4th of July : “The American Eagle is looking at us. His tall feathers have been plucked out, but still he is on the roost. Miss Columbia is also standing with her flag staff and flag on to it, but she looks like a jiassee. Fourth pf J uly comes but once a year, but it’s dull. We must fix up the Eagle, get the Goddess anew set of teeth and a waterfall, and have 4th of July got up regardless of expense. Wo must give all the Mormon women a husband apiece, marry the anxious schoolmarms that come down South to teach the darkies, put the niggers to work, build a horse rail road lrom New York to the City of Mexico, dam up the Gulf Stream, lick England (old and new), annex Cuba, and we will be agaiu a great and glorious country.” Successfui. Trap for Rogues.— Tire Charleston South Carolinian states that on the 2lld ult., three thieves were found dead behind the counter of a druggist in King street in that city. It seems that poison had been put in some food and placed in a convenient position, which the robbers had eaten and died. Situfff, Tobacco, Cigars, Lite. A Dollar Saved is a Dollar Gaiced.
