THE LABWKST r fIRCt'LATIONi
SUNDAY MORNING March 25, 1860
[From the Southern Churchman.]
The Mother’s Thanksgiving.
BY M. E.
God be thanked for my boy’s return !
I have wept and prayod for it many a day,
Toll not of losses in money or lands,
Let me rejoioe to-night, I pray.
Now you may laugh at tho tears I shed
While tho lagging hours of night went by.
Often in dreams his blood-draggled curls
Were swayed by the breeze's mournful
sigh.
And I looked on his face in its white repose,
Upraised to the shining, pitiluss stars—
Do not mothers weep in those bright abodes
For their boys killed in those far-off wars ?
God be thanked for the hand I clasp,
That it never faltered or swerved in tho
fight, '
He was good to the prisoners, too, men say,
And watched by the wounded many a
night.
God be thanked for his footstep light.
Echoing along the winding stair!
Thanks that my boy stands not with a
crutch
Wearily, wearily pausing there!
Thanks for tho sound of his laughter sweet,
For my heart wakes up lfke the earth in
May 1
Jt might have been hushed by the silence of
death,
In an enemy’s country, far away !
Yet, in my rejoicing, still let me think'
Os my sorrowful neighbor over tho way.
Laugh not so loud ! Sho will hear it, I lear,
And remember her boy, so gallant and
g»J-
God pity tho mothers whose sons eomo not
To fill the old chambers and halls with
glee,
Tho city shines bright, but the stream flows
between,
And it’s hard for our blinded eyes to see!
God pity the captives and exiles who pine
For the country they honored and loved
so well,
On tho shadowy lips of the future a smile
Would seem of a glorious hour to tell.
When tho loved shall bo welcomed back
again
To tho stately halls that eternally shine
In tho light of that God who shall crown
with peaeo
The aching and throbbing temples of
Time.
