THURSDAY MORNING March 29,188* —— SOISSOHS. —There are about forty students at present attending the University of South Carolina. —The confectioners of Paris have agreed with a Missionary Society to in sert extracts from religious works in their bonbons, instead of sentimental mottoes. —The State of South Carolina has just issued a circulating medium in the shape of Treasury Notes, receivable for taxes, ect. It is expected that this will relieve the financial embarrassments of the State. Doubtful. —The receipts from customs last month at the principal Atlantic ports of the United States were $14,027,374, as follows: New York, $12,009,110.94: Boston, (Feb. 1 to Feb. 24,) $1,355,- 514.67; Philadelphia, $340,198.26, and Baltimore, $322,549.83. —A. minister travelling at the West found himself obliged to continue his journey on the Sabbath, in order to meet his appointment for preaching. He hesitated about hiring a conveyance, but finally did so, saying to himself, “I will compromise the matter by talking to the driver, as we go along, on the sub ject of religion.” —A correspondent of the Yorkville Enquirer, writing from Columbia, S. C., says that there remains about seventeen miles of the Charlotte & S. C. Railroad to be completed. Two stage lines are now running betweeen the end of the road and Columbia, and the fare is four dollars by one and four and a half by the other. —From recent scientific investigations in Europe, it has been shown that in localities where impure water has been drank by the inhabitants, the cholera has principally raged, proving impure water to be one of the chief causes of cholera. —A I, farmer in Chesterfield county, Virjjinia, recently brought a suit against a Frenchman for' selling him a deaf mule; he had “geed, whoaed and hawed” until he was hoarse, but the mule would neither gee, whoa, nor haw, consequently he was a deaf mule. The reply of the Frenchman was— Parblue, ze incwel is not deaf; ze mewel no understand ze English you talk to him.” The case holds over to next term. —A new caricature has been gotten up in New York, representing Sumner, Thad. Stevens and “dead duck” Forney sitting in a group discussing the Presi dent’s speech. Sumner has a doleful face, and is wiping a tear off his cheek with a moral pocket-handkerchief. Ste. vens looks like Satan with fire breathing from nostrils and mouth; while B’orney resembles a duck with its feathers turned the wrong way, and from whose mouth proceeds nothing but quack! quack! quack ! In the background appears the Goddess of Liberty, waiving the stars and stripes over the head of Andy John son, and proclaiming, “The preservation of the Constitution and the Union 1” The effect is said to be abmirable. —Of the kindly disposed temper of our people under their afflictions, the New York World thus speaks: “The temper of the South under the constant and malignant taunts of purcliaseable miscreants, like Forney still, remains equable and calm. There is no passion in its press, in the messages of its Gov. ernors, in the acts of its Legislatures, in the speeches of its trusted leaders like Stephens. It waits in patience and bides its time. The freedmen are going to work ; the estimates for the Cotton crop of next year are increasing; there are no outbreaks, despite the Freedmen’s Bureau and the plentiful seeds of discord it has sown and is sowing in every Southern State. The following satisfactory answer was giyen by a “dry Yankee” to a St. John’s merchant. As he chanced* to be in a store in the above named city, the mer chant, and others present, ascertaining that he was from St. Albans, began to question him as to public opinion on the Fenian movements, designs, etc. Said the merchant; —“What do the Fenians expect to do with Canada, should they take it ?” “Well,” said the Yankee, after a little hesitation, “I don’t exactly know, but it is reported that they are going to give it to the United States for two iron clads and a ram !” i .
