FRIDAY MORNING March 30, 1860 The Fenians.—The New York Day Book, a paper of most uncompromising and positive opinions, which are sup posed with great ability, and a glowing zeal, has thiijto say, among other things, on the Fenian movement. It concerns us of the South and is appropriate to the present occasion: The Abolition movement in our own country, which has revolutionized, for the time being, this Government, is an offshot of British ideas and literature, and hag placed this land hack in that slough of monarchial ideas from which the heroes and statesmen of’76, by their genius and patriotism, lifted her. No persons contributed more generally to this result than these very Fenians themselves, and they now call upon people to rescue Ireland from the very chains which they have helped to forge to make an Ireland of the South 1 The bther day one hundred thousand of these people met in Jones’ Woods to protest against the suspension of the habeas corpus in Ireland, apparently totally oblivions of the fact that one h*lf of our own country is now groaning under military rule, and that they them selves had only been relieved from it for a few weeks 1 At any time during these past four years Mr-. O’Mahoney might have been put in Fort Lafayette, as John Mitchell was into Fortress Monroe, and who would have met in Jones’ Woods to have protested against it ? Now, is not liberty as sweet ip America as in Ireland? Do Irishmen here demand more for the home thiy have left than lor the home they have chosen? We have a matter of-fact notion about these things. While it is natural and proper enough to have a respect for “the land of your birth,” and a reverence for illustrious names who have hallowed it with their lives, yet no amount of fifing and banner car rying will make them any easier in their coffins. We live for the future, not the past. It is both the dictate of duty and common sense to provide for our chil dren—to make tiie world better and happier for them—and improve the Gov ernment, Constitution and laws under which wc and they propose to live in the future. When an adopted citizen tikes the oath of allegiance to this coi'iiTry, he becomes an American. He is no longer an Irishman, a German, or a Scotchman, and if he regards that oath as sacred, he is bound to work and labor for the greatness, glory, honor and pros perity of the land which he has adopted as his own. The land of his birth is no longer his. He has renounced it, voluntarily, and his lot is cast for better or worse among another people, who have reached forth the hand ot invita tion and welcomed him among them. We do not pretend to say that we should not have a sympathy for all na tions atpd people ground down by tyranny and misrule, and, if in our power, aid to break the chains with which their op pressors bind them. But reforms begin at home. Do not go upon lunatic ex peditions which can only result in disas ter, while the duties we owe to our country, or the country we have sworn to cherish, are unfulfilled. —A little girl entered a bar-room, and in pitiful tones told the keeper that her mother had sent her there to get eight cents. “Eight cents,” said the keeper. “Yes, sir.” “What does your mother want with eight cents ? I don’t owe her anything.’! “Well,” said the child, “Father spends all his money here for rum, and we have had nothing to eat to day. Mother wants to buy a loaf of bread.” “Kick her out,” said a loafer to the bar-keeper. “No,” was the reply, “I’ll give her the money, and if her father comes back I’ll kick him out.” —Delegations in favor of admitting the Indian Territory, Utah and Colo rado as States into the Union are now at Washington. Among the Mormons is a son of Brigham Young, who is said te be strongly in favor of Utah becoming a State. —A telegram from Indianapolis says a “singular fact in relation to the move ment for the liberation of Ireland, in that city is, that many who found it con venient to be British subjects when a draft was necessary, are now the most ardent, blatant and blood thirsty Fe nians.” Fare Keduced.
