SUNDAY MORNING April I,H 6 Where’s Swirn ?—lf there is a man by the name of John Smith in the United Suites, he is hereby informed that there is a letter for him in the post olliee. — Baltimore Sun. The last wo heard of Mr. Smith, he was living in Michigan.— 'lulcdo (Ohio) Blade. That’s a mistake. John Smith has been nrrested and sent to the Peniten tiary from here for stealing a keg of sera]) iron whiskey. —Buffalo Advertiser. All wrong. John Smith has been ar rested and sent to Sing-Sing for partici pating in a Copperhead Convention at Albany. —Broome Republican. Gb, pshaw ! John Smith is over here editing the Alta California, ami superin tending the construction of a whirligig to grind smoke.— S. P Flag. Mistake somewhere. Smith was in Markleville all summer with a wheel barrow wheeling sunshine down in a cellar to dry buckwheat. —Alpine Chron icle. The identical John Smith above re ferred to recently appeared in the city of Atchison, and is running a snake-and monkey-show at tfie corner of Fourth and Commercial streets. —Atchison Free Press. Beg votir pardon—hut that Smith has been in this city all winter acting as assistant tutor in a political gymnasium, —ljcavcnworth Bulletin. All wrong, gentlemen. John Smith is neither constructing a whirligig to grind smoke, nor wheeling sunshine down a cellar to dry buckwheat, but is an honored representative in the present Legislature here, and answers his name at roll call with as much nonchalance as it it were simply Jones or Brown.— lopeka, Deader. Yon are all wrong. Smith has turned “abolitioner,” and, at last accounts, was running a “nigger machine ’ at Juuction City, Kansas. We glean from the Union of the 13th ult. —Kansas Demo crat. Not muchly, says Artemus, the veri table John P. Smith is my travelling agent. You are all badly posted for newspaper editors.. John Sipith was up by a steamboat on the Totnbigbeo a few weeks ago, and has not come down yet. —AT. O. ?Vwe Dell* —- - Why, what a mistake 1 He has come down, and has been reconstructed and harmonised, and is now supposed to be engaged in making a marble top and a looking-glass for the Freedmen’s Bu reau. When he gets through with that job, some other paper can “pass him around.” Ax Afffxttxg Incident.— The con flagration ol the scaffolds intended for fireworks for the celebration of the mar riage of Louis XVI, is generally known. Amidst the distracted multitude pressing on every side, trampled under the horses’ feet, precipitated into tho ditches of the line Royal and the square, was a young man, with a girl with whom he was in love. She was beautiful; their attach ment had lasted several years;pecuniary causes had delayed their union; but the following day they were to be married. For a long time the lover, protecting his betrothed, keeping Iter behind him, cov ering her with his own person, sus tained her strength and eourage. But the tumult, the cries, the terror and peril every moment increased. “ I am sink ing,” she said; “my strength fails—l can go no further.” “There is yet a way,” cried the lover, in despair; “ get ou my shoulders.” He feels that his#d vico has been followed, and the hope of saving her whom he loves, redoubles his ardor and strength. He resists the most violent concussion ; wilh his arms firmly before his breast, he with difficulty forces bis way through the crowd; at length he clears it. Arrived at one of the extremities of tho place, having set down his pre cious burthen, faltering, exhausted, fa tigued to death, but intoxicated with joy ; ho turns round ; it was a different person ! —another, more active, had ta ken advantage of his recommendation, his beloved was no more! At Durham assizes a deaf old lady, who had brought an action for damages against her neighbor, was being exam ined, when the judge suggested compro mise, and instructed counsel to ask what she would take to settle the matter. “His lordship wants to know what you will take?” asked the learned counsel, bawl ing as loud as he could in the old lady’s ear. “ I thank his lordship kindly,” an swered the ancient dame; “and if it is no inconvenience to him, I’ll take a lit tle warm ale /” IVotice to Cotton Shippers.
