AUGUSTA, GA., WEDNESDAY MOBBING, APRIL 4, 1866.
VOI.. I.
Sjff Dailii s|«ss.
THE LARGEST CIRCULATION.
WEDNESDAY MORNING April 4,1866
Rafflino off a Baby. —An lowa
paper says that a woma’u recently came
to the Minnesota House, in Dunleith,
with a young child, and after stopping a
day or two, suddenly left without the
baby, and did not return. The land
lord happened to go over to Dubuque,
and mentioned the circumstance to a
couple of friends, married but childless.
One of them proposed to adopt the little
one as his own. The other immediately
made the same proposition, when a dis
pute arose as to which of the would-be
parents should have the infantile waif.
Finally an appeal was made to the dice
.box. Quite a number of people gath
ered round the table, interested specta
tors of the singular contest ; and the
winner named Reiser, was greeted with
a shout of applause. The child is a
pretty girl, three weeks old, and her
new-found parents are brimming over
with happiness.
The Burning of Columbia. —The
Charleston South Carolinian, in refer
ring to General Sherman’s recent letter
on the burning of Columbia, says:
“General Sherman, we perceive, persists
in the assertion, that the City of Colum
bia was destroyed by order of General
Wade Hampton. Hampton joins issue
upon the fact. The onus probandi
rests upon General Sherman. He must
produce the orders ot Hampton and
substantiate the charge. Unless he can
show that Hampton contrived, even
while he (Sherman) was in full posses’
sion of Columbia, for more than twelve
hours, to introduce five thousand of his
Confederates, clothe them in Federal
uniforms, and keep them busy, with
torch and:-combustibles, flying from
house to house, in the presence of five
thousand witnesses, all his asseverations
must be in vain. His crime is patent.’’
Comfort at Funerals. —The progress
of luxury is rapid—especially in New
York; A company advertise# that they
have a convenient and beautiful ceme
tery near that city ; that it is reached by
rail road ; that the cars are warmed in
cold weather, so that mourners suffer no
exposure; that, in fact, they have intro
duced all the modern improvements, and
can undertake to bury the dead in the
shortest time and in a style which leaves
nothing to be desired in the way of ease,
rapidity and comfort. Competition may
be the iife of trade; hut it is slightly
shocking to have that life carried up to
the grave.— Boston Transcript.
—lt is stated that an Austrian decree,
ordering that all the children of the
public schools in Bohemia, henceforth,
will be obliged to study the Bohemian
language, has caused large masses of
the German population to sell their real
estate, and emigrate to the neighboring
German provinces. Others are prepar
ing to emigrate to the United States; in
general, the emigration to this country
during the present year will reach un
precented proportions.
—A young woman named Maria J.
Kimball, of Paterson, N. J., is on trial
in New York for marrying more than
her share of husbands. A poor woman
in the, same city, sadly in want of a hus
band, was found in a vacant lot, suffer
ing sadly, with anew born babe beside
her.
—Dr. Marion Simms, formerly of
Montgomery, Ala., has won such fame
in France and Great Britain as an ac
complished surgeon, that the French
Emperor has conferred upon him the
Cross of the Legion of Honor.
—Broadway is full of little flower
girls, selling bunches of violets and
other early flowers at five cents.
—A new revenue stamp for imported
cigars, more difficult to counterfeit than
the old one, is about to be issued.
—There are splendid prospects of a
large grain and gold yield in California
this year.
—Princess Helena pouts because her
mamma will not let her be married until
next June.
—Artists may not be guilty of direct
falsehoods, but they generally give things
a color.
—Admiral Goldsborough’s fleet has
sailed from Lisbon for the Mediterra
nean.
—What piece of carpentry becomes a
gem a3 soom as it is finished ? Agate.
