THTIIhGEST CIRCULATION.
SUNDAY MORNING April 8, 1868
[From the Memphis Bui It tin]
Monastery liells.
BY OODSIiT XOURMA.
Dedicated to Miit Sallie B Daily, qf Orantland,
Georgia.
>*ot oft we bear those magic sounds,
Within our loved bright Southern realm ;
But in the Oriental bounds
Os Moorish Spain, *tis like a dream,
To bear the bells, the charmiDg beHa,
Those sacred inoiiaeterjr bells.
Within some deep, sequestered dell,
With Alpine mountain sentries round,
The ancieut chapels' silvery bell,
Enchants the dreamy sacred ground,
And of our Jesus pastiou tolls,
While softly tremolo those sweet bells.
The vespers’ hymn soft whisp’ring tones,
Fh-ai. down the aisles their wealth of
*ong ;
And sobbiug o’er their beads, the moans
Ot meek eyed nuns—a sacred throng—
Sing “Misere” to the bells,
The tolling monastery bells.
Hail Mary ! full of grace ; the Lord
Is ever with thee. Blessed art thou
Among women. Mother of God 1
Pray for us wicked sinners now,
And at the hour of death, and bells
Will toil lor us, those sacred knells.
Within the chancel’s crimsoned flame,
And sunbeams on the mottled floor,
Madonna, as an angel, came
To point the soul to thut bright shore,
Where love and song for ever dwell.
And sweetly sigh, as eveuing bells.
While swinging censer’s perfumed lights,
Are smoking in the twilight gloom,
Their clouds are weird as ghosts of uigbt,
The soul dreams of a happy home,
Where soft and mystic music tells
Our love with echoiug, goiden bells.
Yes ! welcome visions of the home.
Where angels love immortal dwells,
Cotne o’er the soul that loves to roam,
And bear the tale'’ that fancy tells,
From sweet-tbngued, laughing silvery bells,
Euchauting. monastery bells.
Far o’er the starlit wrinkled sea.
The pulsing waves throb out soft sighs,
And far across yon flow ry l**a,
With tremblingtoi.es the music flies ;
E'en sweet, though sadly souud those
knells,
Wheu rung by monastery bells.
Beyond the grave—a joyous land,
Os glorioui forms, and love and song,
And gold haired maids, an angel huu&.
We’ll meet aAJon«ecrated throng,
Whose melody’s enchanting spells
Shall ring in monastery bells.
How soft, now loud, now wbisp’ring low,
The bells ring out their spirit tunes,
And on the perfumed night air flow
Their l fe away, as dyiug moans
The moonlit wind, which sighing tells
The secrets of those chapel bells.
Oh ! may we thus for ever live.
Within the charms of love s dear dreams ;
And. in life’s twilight, fondly weave/
. Sweet memories, whose gentling beams
Shall ring, w thin our hearts like btlls,
Like faucy’s monastery bells.
