PUG HE’S ’ 120 Broad street. Daily Press. AIGIJfeTA, GA., FRIDAY MORNING, APRIL. 13, 1866. VOL. I. Bje Ml\) |rtss : THE LARGEST CIRCULATION. FRIDAY MORNING April 13,1866 soiesons. —Of the nino Justices of the United States Supreme Court, but one, Judge Wavne, of Georgia, is from the Southern States. There is one vacancy. —The following is the latest conum drum which we find in our exchanges: Why do the birds feel depressed early in a summer morning ? Because their lit tle bills are all over due ? —Bishop Elliott, of Georgia, has writ ten a letter to Bishop Johns, of the Dio cese of Virginia, giving official notice of the re union of the Diocese of Georgia wiih the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States. —A warning is conveyed in the fol lowing paragraph, which we clip from a foreign journal : “Green robes, it ap pears, are now very much the fashion on the continent. Prof. Maschka and Dr. Lerck, of Prague, have ana lyzed a green dress, which was recently worn at a ball in Vienna, and discov ered in the thirty-six metres of which it was composed no less than two ounces of arsenic.” • —Clocked stockings are again coming into favor with ladies who wear looped or short skirts. “Trellis” patterns seem to be the most plenty, but the richest are “Mosaics,” and the most brilliant the "Star” styles. They come in spun silk and in Lisle thread that equals the fines, silk in softness. Very few are in white- Most are unbleached, and have the ap pearance of flesh color. —As four or five darkies were passing an agricultural implement store on Broad street, in Nashville, a short time ago, one of them, pointing to a cultivator, said: “A man kin jist set on that thing and ride while he is a piowin !” “Golly,’ replied another, “the d—ri rascals was too sharp to tink o’ dat "fore the niggers was free.” —An advertisement in a New York paper, promising on receipt of twenty five cents, to send a receipt to keep water in wells and cisterns from freezing, a man in a neighboring city forwarded the currency, and received the following answer: “Take in your well and cistern on cold nights, and keep them by the fire.” —People are a little timid about trav elling on the ice at times, we give the capacity of the ice, furnished by the U. S. Ordnance Department as correct. Ice two inches thick will bear infantry; four inches, cavalry with light guns; six inches, heavy field guns; and eight inches, the heaviest siege guns, with one thousand pounds weight to a square inch. —They stop at nothing in France. What is to be thought of the experiments implied in the following announce ments ? “A horse can live twenty-five days without solid food, merely drinking water ; be can live seventeen days with out food or drink, but only five days when consuming solid food without drinking. Ten days of solid food, with an insufficient quantity of drink, are enough to wear out his stomach. A horse which had no water for three days drank elevnji gallons in three minutes.’’ —The Philadelphians were sold by a waggish newspaper, which announced that President Johnson and several of his cabinet were coming on to that city to make speeches. A large crowd as sembled at the hotel to greet the Presi dent only to be reminded that it was the Ist of April. It is curious with what zest people observe this ridiculous cus tom of fooling their neighbors yearly- The observance is as old as history, and even the old Hebrew prophets have been used for this purpose, as will be seen by reference to Hosea, xv chapter, 10th to 14th verses. —According to the Cork Examiner , upwards of four thousand persons left Ireland during the first week of the present month, going to the United States by way of Queenstown. It is es timated that two-thirds of the number were of the middle and fanning class. The farmers were complaining last year of the want of laborers to gather in the harvest; but if the emigration continues at the present rate (says the Examiner,) one thousand five hundred a week, they will certainly have more cause to com plain this year, as those leaving now are mostly of that class. About six hun dred passengers are now waiting in Queenstown to get away by the steamer. Dry Goods , Etc. SPRING AND SUMMER GOODS THE WELL KNOWN AND POPULAR STORE OF I.
