€jjt iailj Jttss. FRIDAY MORNIiO., April Ks, i8*(l Homs and Friends. Oh ! there's a power to make each hour Aa aweet n» Heaven designed it; Nor need we roam to bring it home, Though few there be that find it! We seek too high for things close by, And lose what natnre found us ; For lilehath here no cbanns so dear Aa home and friends aronnd ua ! We oft destroy the present joy For future hopes—and praise them ! Whije flowers as sweet 11 om at our feet, If we’d but'atoop to raise them ! For things afar still sweetest are When youth’s bright spell bath bound us; Bat soon we’re taught the earth hath naught Like home and friends around us ! The friends that speed in time of need, When hope’e last reed is shaken, To show ns still that, come what will, We are not quite forsaken ; Though all were night, if bat the light From Friendship's altar orownod us, ’Twould prove the of earth was this— Our home and friends around us ! —They are trying to find a young man in Chicago who is heir to one hun dred thousand dollars. Several young ladies in other cities are looking for one just like him. —At a ball in Paris the other even ing, the Princess of St. Elia appeared as the Press, in a robe covered with the pages and titles of several journals print ed on satin. —Rt Rev. J. Johns, D. D., of the Diocese of Virginia, administered the rite of confirmation in the Church of the Ascension, Baltimore, Sunday. A Washington dispatch says the per son arrested a week or two ago, on sus picion of being the gueril'a Quantrell, of Missouri and Kansas notoriety, is proveu to be a man named W, L. Ham ilton, and has been discharged, and fur nished transportation to New York In order of the War Department. —The work ou the new bridge over the Oostanaula is progressing finely. It is to be a latticed, covered bridge, with bed wide enough for wagons to pass each, other. They hoped to have it done ou the sth inst., and for wagons in a week from that date. —A South Carolina paper culls on all Confederate officers who were, at any period, in command of the defenses of Forts Sumter and Moultrie, to put tlieir facts, observations, and opinions on re cord, that the future historian may have the proper authorities before him. —Death is the most certain of events. That it will come, no one can question ; but when, no one can decide. The young behold it afar in the future; the aged regard it still at a distance ; but both are smitten suddenly as a bolt from the cloud—a serpent from the brake— or a shaft from the unseen quiver. There is iio safety, therefore, save in that ha bitual preparation which nothing can deceive, and nothing can surprise. —Lord Byron’s grand-daughter—the daughter of his beloved Ada—was among the first to take her seat in the Peeresses’ gallery in the House of Lords at the recent opening of Parlia ment by the Queen. Her pale face, light brown hair, and bright, intelligent eyes, created general interest. She is considered to have a greater resem blance to her illustrious grand-father than even her late mother. —The Selma (Ala.) papers announce the death of Mr. Win. B. Edmondson, living three miles above the city. He was called out of his house, by some one who pretended 'to have business with him, and shot And instantly killed, eight buckshot taking effect in his breast. Another man standing guard a few nights after at Mr. Edmondson’s, to protect the family from further vio lence, was himself shot by some person unknown. Subsequently, a negro was arrested, who confessed and implicated several others. Fertilizers. Guano! Guano!! TO THE PLANTERS •’ OK GEORGIA AND SOUTH CAROLINA.
