SATURDAY MORNING April 14, IS6B SCISS O R 8 . —The greatest hard-ships in this country are not our iron-c ads. —The President has pardoned Ex- Gov. N. B. Moore, of Alabama. —lt is understood that Judge Coburn will be the Repub'ican candidate for Congress from the Indianapolis District. —Arrangements are being made for a speedy re opening of the Government land offices in all the Southern States. —-The interest on the debt of North Carolina now due aud unprovided for is $:!,.')00,000. —At last accounts from St. Paul, they were having their one-hundredth consecutive day of good skating. —On last St. Patrick’s day, the Mis sissippi river at Galena was closed with ice, so that men walked over—an event which has not occurred since IRSR. —There have already been <IOO balls in New York this winter. They have been attended by 400,000 people, and the whole expenses have been $025,000. —A Chicago firm, dealing in tobacco and cigars, has just been convicted ol making false income returns. The penalties amount to nearly $20,000. —A dry warm soil seems most favora ble to the production of honey. White clover, even, when it grows on low, marshy land, has little or no honey iu it. —The fisheries on the North Caro lina sounds arc said to be in full opera tion, and there are excellent prospects of an abundant supply of herring the coming season, —An exchange, in describing a re cent celebration, says : ‘'The procession was very fine and about two miles long, as was also the prayer of Dr. Perry, the Chaplain.” i —Dr. W. D. Lyles, State Senator from Noxubee, Miss., is writing a his tory of the cotton transactions along the Mobile and Ohio Rail Road since the surrender. —Good women are the salt of the earth, sweet ones the sugnr, pungent ones the pepper, biting ones the mus tard, and sour ones the vinegar. —At St. Louis, on the 10th instant, a criminal under sentence ol death, was taken from the jail to be baptized by immersion at the Christian Baptist Church. —The Syracuse (N. V). Courier men tions the death of William Oley, a pen sioner of 1812, at the advanced age of one hundred and six years and seven davs. —The New York Tribune says that the taxes in this country are heavier than are or ever were borne by any other thirty millions of people on earth. Adding our State and municipal to our national taxes, they amount to not a penny less than S2O each, per annum, for the whole American people. —Old Deacon Sharp never told a lie, but he used to fielate this: “He was standing one day before a frog-pond— we have his word for it—and saw a large garter snake make an attempt upon an enormous big bull frog. The snake seized one of the frog’s hind legs, and the frog, to be on a par with his snake ship, caught him by the tail, and both commenced swallowing one another, and continued this carnivorous opera tion until nothing was left of either of them.’’ Fertilisers.
