THE URtiKST (IR( TUfION.
SATURDAY MORNING April 14,18#8
A Girl’s Resolve.
I long for lore—a jewel yet unworn ;
I'm offered golden friendship, laughter,
mirth ;
Such gems ulone I can but treat with
scorn—
m ’Tie liko renouncing Paradise for earth.
Knowledge alone can keep my soul in place,
And this I’ll seok in every book or stone,
I’ll search tor it in every common face,
And study books in solitudo alone.
Nature shall bow me every hiddon tl) 'u: ’ ‘ •
The skies, the streams, the air shell train
my mind ;
I’ll seek for secrets that are yet unsought,
And what I search for I will surely find ;
Then if Love comes he will fiud Wisdom
hero,
And joy shall reign unsullied by a tear.
Cure fob Difthkria.—A French phy
sician, in a paper presented to the
French Academy of Medicine, asserts
that lemon juice is one of the most
efficacious medicines which can be ap
plied in diptberia, and lie relates that
when he was a dresser in the hospital his
own life was saved by ils timely appli
cation. He got three dozen lemons and
gargled his throat with the juice, swal
lowing a little at the same time, in order
to act on the more deep-seated parts.
