to defend itself, but simply as an act of jus
tice to Dr. Winkler.
Captai.v Perkins.—This officer, who
bas for several months held the position of
Provost Marshal iu this city, was to have
left hero yesterday, to be mustered out of
service, after which he will return to his
home iu Connecticut, lie has, by his cour
tesy and mildness.won many friends in this
community ; and by the faithful discharge
of his duties the satisfaction of his superior
officers. Having been five years in the ser
vice, a return to his home will doubtless
he very gratifying to him and to his friends,
and ho will carry with him the good will of
those who have had dealings with him here.

yesterday, handed over to His Honor the
Mayor, hy Capt. Perkius, Provost Marshal.

will have charge of all their buildings.
