LARGEST CITiTciHUIiLyTION.
BATUBDAY MORNING April 28, 1866
Prentice on Brdwni.ow.—The Louis
ville Journal thus speaks of the parson
Governor of Tennessee: “The filthy
mouthed Brownlotr, of Tennessee, has
aldressed a letter to Hon. Wm. D..
Kelly, the negro-suffrage member of
Congress from Philadelphia, in which
he bitterly denounces President John
son and bis great restoration policy,
and represents the condition of Tennes
see as extremely deplorable. The letter
is to ns the source of a two-fold pleasure.
In the first place, the very fact that
Brownlow denounces the President and
his policy is strong evidence in itself
that both the President and his policy
are wise and just; and secondly, the
fact that the people of Tennessee are
not acting in accordance with Brown
low’s wishes, proves conclusively, that
they are acting just as a jfatriotic peo
ple should. We should greatly suspect
the propriety of atty measure which
Brownlow approved, and question the
integrity of any people whom Brownlow
praised. It has been our rule for many
years, when reading anything lrom the
pen of this cor.summnte humbug, to re
verse every statement made by him, in
order to reach the truth. lie has never
been known lo stnt» a factor a principle
correctly. The intense hatred and con
tempt in which he nnd hfs peculiar fol
lowers in Tennessee are held by the
people are deserved Jto the fullest extent.
They are entitled to the unmitigated
scorn of every honest man in the-State.
Making , a Fr l.ow Feel Bao.—A
friend of ours recently bought a pair of
pants from a Dauphin at reel clothing firm,
for which he paid the amount demanded,
sl2, and walked off. A lew days qfter, he
was in the same establisl ment, wearing
th“ pants, and the other partner (the first
being out), looking at them and feeling
the texture, enquired:
“John where did you buy these pants;
I see they are new?' 1
“Oh, down here a little piece,” an.
swered John.
“What did you pay for them?”
“Twelve dollars.”
“Too much, too much, the man swin
dled you. 1 can sell you a pair just like
them for SB, and glad to do it. Let me
show you."
And suiting the action to the word,
the clothier walked back to a pile oftrow
sers, nnd commenced holding them np
to view.
“Never mind,” says John. “I looked
at all them when I bought these, nnd
your partner told me when he sold them
to we that I was getting a bargain.”
The man of the cloth was a little taken
hack at first, but soon rallied, and an
swered :
“Oh, pshaw! I knew it all the while. I
was only joking with you —wanted to
make you feel bad.”
John says he “can’t see it by those
lamps.”— Mobile Tribune.
—The oldest stove, probably, in the
United States, is one which warms the
hall of Virginia’s Capitol, in Richmond.
It wns tnade in England, and sent, to
Virginia in 1770. aud warmed the
House of Burgesses for sixty years be
fore it was removed to its present 10. a
tion, where it has been for thirty years.
It has survived three British mon
archs ; has been cotemporaneous with
four kingly monarchs, two republics,
and two Imperial Governments of
France. The great Republic of Amer
ica hvs been torn by internecine strife,
the breaches partly healed, and still the
old stove remains unmoved in the midst
of all. Ksinperpetua.
—An English married lady has con
sulted her lawyer on the question,
whether having married her husband
for his money, and that money being all
spent, she is not a widow and at liberty
to marry ngaiu. The decision was re
served.
