That there is great deal of literary talent in the South is undeniable. The columns of Northern journals have al ways teemed with it, and Northern book publishers hare made handsome profits from its productions. And there is much of it, too, of the highest order ; bqt it does not meet with that encour agement at home to which it is enti tled. This is what we complain of. We think that all tho resources of our country, whether of a mental or physical character, ought to be developed. The people of the North, with the most corn mendable zeal and energy, wurl; out the interests of their section of the Union in every possible way, developing their resources, encouraging their home en terprises, sustaining their literature, and doing all in their power to make that section great and prosperous. Why cannot we learn a lesson from them ? Why cannot we patronize, for instance, onr own literary journals, so that they may become as liberal in their pay ments for contributions as are Northern journals, and thus give encouragement to our own writers and authors ? It is true we have not a great many such journals in our section ; but we have a few existence, arffl a few more in prospective. Are they to be sustained ? or are we to continue to patronize those who continually abuse and insult us ? This is a question we wish H> see prac tically answered. We want to see those unfeeling, ungenerous parties, who take our money, and give us only taunts nnd jeers in return, properly rebuked ; and this can be most effectively done by wiSiholiiing our patronage from them, and giving it to our own people, who live amongst us, who share onr misfor tunes, and who help to support the in dustry of our section. We have accepted the situation, nnd desire to live up to it in good faith. Such is our intention and we do not intend to be driven from it. But is it manly, is it generous, for Northern publishers to in sult us on every occasion that presents itself to them, either by editorials, pic. tures, or other ways? Certainly not. Then what redress have we got? None; Vmt to adopt the course which we have suggested—that is allow them to enjoy their privileges of 'abusing us without our assistance. No doubt they can live and thrive without our patronage ; bnt that patronage withdrawn from them ani bestowed upon our own journals will, enable them to live and thrive, also. Fnrthqjmore the Southern pro prietors will be able to improve their journals, to pay liberally for contribu tions, thus offering an encouragement to the literary talent in our midst which will soon build it up, and redound to the credit aud interest of our section. Let us try the experiment.
