SUNDAY MtJKNING.....a...Apr|I ! »< 18M A Fatueu's Advice.— TherqiapFgreat dc*l of .philosophy and' *onjef lil »*ronfj “horse sense” in the following paragraph, : and conveyed too in a manner well cal culated to impress itself upon the mind of one who will read it carefully. W« commend it to such of our young friends as may be, like “Bob,” “übout leaving' home for strange parts.* It contains good moral lessons: “Boh, you are about leaving home for strange parts. You are going to throw me out of the game aod go it aloue. The odds are agin you. Bob-premem ber that industry and perseVerince are winning cards, a* they are the 'bowers.’ Book learning, and ail that sort of thing, will do to till up with, like small trumps, but you must have tbe bowers to back them or they ain’t worth shucks. If luck is agin you pretty troiigddn’t cave and look like a sick chicken on a rainy day. but hold up, vour head and make believe you are flush of trumps; they don't play so hard again you. I've lived and travelled around some. Boh, and I've found out that ns soon ss folks thought you held a weak hand, they’d all buck agin you strong. So, when you're sorter weak, keep on ahold front; but play cautious; he satisfied with a | p'int. Many’s the hand I’ve seen ’em •mere cause they played for too much. Keep vour eyes well skinned,Bob: don’t li t ’em nig you ; recollect the game lays as much with the head as with the hands. Be tempe r rtte; never get drunk, for then no matter liow good your hand, you won’t know how to play it; both bowers and the ace won’t save you 5 for there's surtin to be a “miss deal” cr something wrong. , And another thing, Bob (this was spoken in a low tone), don't go too much on women; queens is kinder poor cards ; the more you have of ’em the worse for you ; you might have three, and nary a trump. I don’t say discard 'em all ; if yon get hold of one that is trump, a it's all gpod, and there’s sartin to be one out of four. And above all, Bob, be honest; never take a man’s trick wot don't belong tgrfou, nor w curds, dr *HlgfTor W »e!> yOu can’t look your man in the face, and when that's the case, there’s no fun in the game; it’s a regular ‘cut-throat.’ So-now, Bob, farewell ; remember wot I tell you, and you'll be sure to win ; and if you don’t, it sarves you right if you get ‘skunked.’ ” Bishop Soule. —The Nashville Dis patch has the following in relation to this eminent and venerable man of God : “We are sorry to announce that this patriarch of the Wesleyan Metho dism in America, is supposed, by his physicians, to be rapidly declining. Bishop Joshua Soule is about eight f five years of age, ar.d every one who has read or heard anything of religious denominations during the last half cen tury thinks of Bishop Soule, whenever the people of his persuasion are men tioned. Few men have devoted all the energies of so great a mind to the min istrations of religion exclusively, as he has done, for an equal number of years. Perhaps none have preached the gospel more powerfully, by practice as well as by precept. Musical Discoveries. —The Spanish papers announce with a great deal of pride that D. Juan de Castro, author of the popular hymn, “Africa,” has suc ceeded in “deciphering and translating into modern musical notes a long lpst system of notation in use in the ninth and tenth centuries, some thousand years ago.” He has also discovered “the construction and functions of the hydraulic organ, long since lost, of the ancient Greeks and Romans.” They say that ihese new discoveries will be made known and explained at the ap proaching World’s Fair, at Paris, and that they will make “a complete revolu tion in the history of music.” Mosher, Thomas & Schaub, O4\ BROAD STREET— Under Masonic Hall, AUGUSTA, GA., Direct Importers and Doalers in ENGLISH AND FRENCH China!
