THURSDAY .MORNING May 3, 1868 SCISSORS. •—German telegrams are still hopeful of peace. —Somebody says very beautifully : “As small planets are nearest the sun, so are little children nearest to God.” —The four great preventalives of the cholera, are caution, cleanliness, calm ness and cheerfulness. —He who never changes in any of his opinions, never corrects any of his ! mistakes. j —A false friend is like the shadow on j a sun dial, which appears in fine I weather, but vanishes at the approach j of a cloud. j —No proof of temperance—a man I with his hat off at midnight explaining to a lamp post the principles of his ■ parly. j —Why are young ladies at the j breaking up of a party like arrows? Be cause they can't go off without a beau, ! and are in a quiver till they get one. j —Water is not a fashionable beverage to drink your friend's health in, but is i a capital one to drink your own. in. I And which is of the most consequence j to you ? j —An English farmer has a newly I born lamb with seven perfect legs, upon any four of which it can walk with per feet ease. —‘‘Now my little boys and girls,” said a teacher, “I want you to be very i still—so still that you can hear a pin drop.” For a minute all was still, and a little boy -shrieked, "let her drtr I” —The New York ITtnild asks : -What are a few months or a few years in the lile of a nation ?” Nothing, if the soul that animated it. and the liberty that ennobled it, be dead. —The Iberville (La ) South says that the people of that section are now ! enjoying the only two legacies left them j by their Northern brethren —destitution ! and small pox. I —Aaron Bang advises all who are j not Israelites to go on eating pork as | usual. He says he cares nothing about j the tricky noises some doctors are 1 making in the newspapers. | —Sambo was hacking away at a tough j oak, when lightning struck a tree near | him, and shivered it. “Bress de Lord!” said he, “I jes like urn try dis one; I reckon dey find dere match 1” —Parson Br'ownlow made one of his characteristic speeches at Knoxville, a few days since, in which he declared he “would not start to heaven with the Democratic party.” Right about those, parson : nor with any other party, either. —Washington and Johnson alone, of all the Presidents of the United States, turned their backs on power. Let their names go down to posterity, bound to gether by a band of immortal flowers. —Mr. Fessenden reported in the Sen ate and Stevens in the House Bills, and the proposed Constitutional Amendment from the Reconstruction Committee. The House made them the Special Order for Tuesday week. —lt is said that a Pittsfield Democrat, who is more noted for his political than wisdom, on being informed that Connecticut had gone Republican, in dignantly replied : “I don't care a fig, the President will veto it.” —lt is recorded that a soap merchant was recently caught at sea during a violent storm, when he saved his life by taking a cake of his soap and washing himself ashore. 3he soap, or the story, must have been made of very strong lie. —Dr. Johnson once dined with a Scottish lady who had botch potch for dinner. After the doctor had tasted it, she asked him if it was good. "It is good for hogs, ma'am,” said the doctor. “Then prav.” said the lady, “let me help you to more.” —The New York News says : “The vanity of an ignoble ambition may be gratified by the gaze of the mob, but, to our mind, Gen. Buell alone, una dorned. is a more admirable spectacle than the Lieutenant General, decked with the trappings of rank, and followed by the huzzas of his crowd.
