SATURDAY MORNING May 5, 1868 SCISSORS. —Wigfall (of Texas) and wife, are in London, where they are received with great honor by the aristocratic sympa thizers with the South. —The London Times announces that a marriage is about to take place be tween the Princess Many of Cambridge and the Prince DeTeck, son of the Duke Alexander, of Wurtemberg. —The rivers in the West continue high. The upper Mississippi and its tributaries were still rising at last ad vices. The denizens of the great valley see nothing but disaster before them, unless the flood should speedily abate. —An old bachelor having been laughed at by a bevy of pretty girls, told them they were small potatoes. “We may be small potatoes,” replied one of them, “but we are sweet ones.” —The entire population of New York City, including its suburbs, is 1,458,388. Os this number 859,980 are natives, and 307,403 foreigners—four aliens to every six native born. There are 208,700 Irish, 109,977 Germans, 27,049 English, 8049 French, 9207 Scotch, and 1771 Swiss. —The prepartions on board the Great Eastern for receiving the new Atlantic cable have been completed, and the stowing away of the cable in the tanks commenced on- Saturday. At the end of June or the beginning of July the Great Eastern will commence lying the cable. —The eccentric Lord Holland, of the reign of William 111., used to give his horses a weekly concert in a covered gallery specially erected for the purpose. He maintained that it cheered their hearts, and improved their temper, and an eye-witness says that “they seemed delighted therewith.” —A young lady from the East has brought suit against a prominent St- Louis merchant for a breach of promise; $25,000 is the sum required to heal the pectoral fracture. [A youthful member of the feminine persuasion says that any gentleman is welcome to break her heart at that figure. —A boy brought an egg to school lately in Linn county, lowa. The teacher broke it over the childs head, and told him to go home and have his mother wash his hair. Boy did so. Mother came with a club, hit the teacher with it over the head, and then closed one eye with her first. —The misery of being called upon suddenly to make an extempore speech was once got over by a noted English mathematician, who delivered himself in this fahsion : “Gentlemen, a morbid desire for originality prevents me from saying, ‘ This is the proudest moment of my life,’ and it does not occur to me to say anything else.” —Along the line of the Nashville and Decatur Rail Road, between Columbia and Pulaski, during a thunder storm late ly, a half mile of the telegraph wire was melted, and divided into small frag ments, irregular in shape, and many of them no larger than a buckshot or a small rifle ball. The glass insulators were fused, and the poles were shivered into fragments. —A wide-awake minister, who found his congregation going to sleep one Sunday before he had fairly commenced, suddenly stopped and exclaimed : “Brethren, this isn’t fair ; it isn’t giving a man a half a chance. Wait till I get ajong a piece, and then if it aint worth listening to, go to sleep ; but don’t go before I get commenced ; give a man a chance.” —When extraordinary exertion and wakefulness are needed for some emer gency, strong coffee is the best antidote against drowsiness, as the foes of Fred erick the great once discovered to their cost, when fragrant Mocho had enabled him to pass three days and nights with out sleeping. This pecular property makes it one of the greatest use to all whose pursuits require close and yet vividly active attention, to those in fine, who, to use our home-bred expression, are anxious to keep “wide-awake.” Hence, the French have justly called it the “intellectual drink,” and students everywhere will cordially accept the phrase. •Hit faMj fms.- BOoFASITjOB^EIHTIHi S> OF EVERY DESCRIPTION ’ ■XBCUTID jjf the BEST MANNER. ‘ Tht Fatlttl Poutr Prtutt, and Rest of Workmen enable* ne to do Superior JOB WORN at Cheaper Rate* than eUevhere.
