LARGEST CITY CIRCULATION.
TUESDAY MORNING Muyß,ls6B
Scientific— A Boston journal de
scribes an extraordinary “frost flower” of
Russia, which has been produced,it is said,
in Boston, in a temperature of artificial
cold, iu the following words:—This won
derful plant, or rather flower, is found
only in the northern boundaries of Sibe
r:a, where the snow is eternal. It was
discovered in 1863 by Count Swinoskoff,
the eminant botanist, who was ennobled
by the Czar for his discovery. Bursting
from the frozen snow on the first day of
the year, it grows to the height of three
feet, and flowers on the third day, re
mains in flower for twenty-four hours aud
then dissolves itself into its original ele
ement—stem, leaves and flowers being
of the finest snow. The stalk is about
one inch in diameter; the leaves, three in
number, in the broadest part are an inch
and a half in width, and are covered with
infinitesimal cones of snow; they grow
only on one side of the stalk, to the north,
curving gracefully iu the same direction.
The flower when fully expanded is in
shape a perfect star; the petals are three
inches in length, half an inch wide in the
broadest parts, and tapering sharply
to a point. These are also interlaced
one with another, in a beautiful manner,
forming the most delicate basket of frost
work that the eye ever beheld ; for truly
this is frost work the most wondeful.
The anthers are five in number, and oil
the third day after the birth of the“ flow'
erofsnow”areto he seen on the extremi
ties thereof, trembling and glittering like
diamonds, the seeds of this wonderful flow
er, about as large as a pin’s head ! The
old botanist says when first he beheld
this flower, “I was dumb with astonish
ment; filled with wonderment, which
trave way to joy the most ecstatic on be
holding this wonderful work of naturei
this remarkable phenomenon of snow.
To see this flower springing, from the
snowy ’’esert—horn of its own composite
. re j, , , . . . - ,-re.i
but it fell at my touch, and a morsel oF
snow only remained in my hand.” Gath,
ering some of the flowers in snow in or
der to preserve the little diamond like
seed, he liied to St. Petersburg with, to
him the greatest prize of his fife time. All
through the year they were kept in snow,_
and on the first day of the year follow
ing the Court of St. Petersburg were de
lighted with the bursting forth of the won
derful “frost flower!” Our friends in Bos
ton succeeded in obtaining several of the
seeds, aud all through the summer and
autumn they have been imbedded in
snow brought at great expense from the
White Mountains and the coast of Labra
dor: and they now h.ave the most un
bounded satisfaction and pleasure in
announcing that ail signs arc favorable
j to the realization of their fondest hopes,
the production ot the “flower of snow.”
The snow and ice are in a large glass
refrigerator, with the thermometer forty
five degrees below zero, and the solid
bed ot snow has already begun to show
little fissures aud a slight bulging in the
centre ; unmistakeable evidences of the
j forthcoming of the phenomenon.
I —A benevolent lady went to visit a fam
j fiy who were said to he almost starving
j She found them half clad, cold, and not
a morsel of food in the house. “What
do you most ueed? What would you like
to have?” she asked of the mother of the
family. The woman thought for a mo'
ment, her face brightened, and she an’
swered: “Why, I always did want a wa
terfall ; they’re so beeomin’!”
—A young man in Windham county,
Va., wrote to a druggist in Norwich to
send him some love powders, which
should cause the lady of his love to re.
turn his devotion. The druggist’s clerk
sent back some lozenges, which contained
| a good quantity of tartar emetic. These
j were duly, administered, but the young
[ man’s love suit was not greatly aided
j thereby.
! —Punch mentions a great financial
| reformer who is so devoted to figures
j that, when he has nothing else to do he
j casts up his eyes.
—Why, if you paint a man’s portrait,
j may yon be described as stepping into
his shoes ? Because you make his feet
yours (features). — London Punch.
—The Fenians have become so dis'
gusted with O’Mahony, as to spell his
name Oh 1 Mahony.
—When is a sailor most like a thief ?
When he takes a messmate's watch.
