MERCHANTS WHO DESIRE TO REACH FAMILIES WILL FIND IT A MO6T VALUABLE MEDIUM. Mr. and Mrs. Davis. —A correspon dent of the Norfolk Virginian, writing from Fortress Monroe, May 4tli, says: ‘•lt is now understood that Mrs. Davis, with her little child, had an interview with her husband at half-past eight o’clock yesterday morning. The inter view lasted nearly two hours, and must surely have been extremely gratifying to both. In the course of a twelve month many very noticeable changes occur. It was on the evening of the 20th of April, 1865, that the steamer Wm. P. Clydn ( from which, a few hours before, Jefferson Davis had been landed, slowly set sail, and while the steam and smoke issued from her engine and boilers, she moved slowlv out of the harbor. The sole passengers on the Clyde were Mrs. Du\ is and Mrs. Clay, and her destination was Savannah, the Southern port from which she came. “For nearly a year Mrs. Davis has been refused the privilege of visiting her husband. The result of the many en treaties on. her part, and those of her friends, has at last prevailed on the clemency of President Johnson, and the desired boon has been finally granted. “Your correspondent presumed yester day morning at an early hour so much as to call on Mrs. Davis as she was awaiting, in the sitting room of the Hygeia Hotel, the presence of an officer from the Fortress. Sending in my card by the colored waiter in attendance, the desired object was at once acceeded to. “The sitting room of the hotel has never, by any means, been noted for its comfort, or the expensiveness of its adornments. Entering the room, and passing through the requisite etiquette, occupied but a few seconds, and the agreeable conversation with Mrs. Davis which ensued, was far more than a re compense for the courage it required to solicit such an interview. The manner and conversation of Mrs. Davis was that of one perfectly at home on all subjects, and extremely lady-liko in all her re marks on the various topics of the day, which, perchance, were brought up. She had been allowed the privilege of correspondence with her husband, but of the exact state of his health she dared not hope. The favorable opinions formed from the occasional correspon dents of Northern papers were often dissipated by assertions perfectly con tradictory, and in the long time which has elapsed since she has seen her hus band, it has often been a mere matter ot doubt, owing to the reticence of Mr. Davis in speaking of the subject of his general health. Os the terms of her visit she was not aware, but hoped it would be her privilege to remain at this place until her husband’s fate was de cided. “After conversing for the space of ten minutes, your correspondent retired, much impressed with the interview. “Mrs. Davis was accompanied by a large quantity of baggage. All of this was moved inside the Fort last night, and it is confidently presumed that she has made her home at the residence of Dr. Cooper, the Post Surgeon.” —Mr. J. W. Seaman, of North Hemp stead, on Long Island, is the owner of a cow, which, on the 9th of March last, produced four calves at a birth. They * were all full grown and regularly formed, but still born, and were two of each sex. Mr. Seaman went to his stable about twelve o’clock and found two of them born. He went again at three o’clock and there were two wore. He atter wards kept on the lookout to see if there were others to come, but none made their appearance. —Suits were recently begun in the English Admiralty Court, on behalf of the United States Government, to re cover possession of the Confederate privateers Sumter and Rappahannock. On April 17th the Court decreed that the Sumter should be given to the United States Government, but nodecision had, at the date of our last advices, been an nounced in the case of the Rappahan nock. —Sidney Smith being one day asked his opinion of a certain clergyman's sermon, replied, “ Just as I chew biscuit for my parrot, so he appears to chew Bible for his congregation ; but I fancy he chews all the flavor out of it; and though it may bo thus rendered easy to digest, I doubt if they get much nourish ment from it.” New Advertisements.
