THURSDAY MORNING May 24, 1866 War With Europe. — John Mitchell writes to the New York Daily News: “I can see no escape from a European war, aud if it breaks out it will be tre mendous. It is probable, too, that Amer. ica would profit by it both in commerce and in population. Besides, there must be several large houses in the wooden leg business in Boston. Also, the eminent crutch aud splint manufactories of Con necticut, whose business was unreasona bly cut short by the too suddeu termina tion of the American war, just when they had laid in large stocks of seasoned hickory, and their machinery brought to a high state of perfection, for turning out their wares with utmost punctuality, neatness and dispatch. It is to be hoped that they have not taken down their machinery nor chopped up into fire wood all that hickory; for now, as I seriously believe, that they are going to have a fine foreign market opened to their en terprise. Legs will be lively, and splints and crutches in good demand.” —A Countryman recently visited Paris and had his pocket picked. This so an* noyed him (he was a Norman, the Yan kee of France), he determined to punish the next pickpocket who robbed him. He contrived a sort of slip-knot which should arrest the thief's hand. While visiting the Louvre, he felt a pickpocket’s hand in his pocket, and saw he had caught the thief. He determined to enjoy his vengeance before delivering the rogue to the police. So he quietly walked from picture to picture, dragging the pick pocket after him. for the thief dared not say a word. He had enjoyed the rogue’s torment for an hour, when he determined to deliver him to a policeman about thirty yards off. When begot near the police man he turned around to collar his pHs. oner—there was nobody! The rogue had cut off the Norman’s whole coat-tail and made off with it. —A young man in Newport, want ed a wife badly and took a ycung lady out to ride. After proceeding a few miles he asked her, “Will you marry me?” The answer was as short as it was sweet: No sir!” Young gent says:“Well, get out and go home afoot then.” The young lady accepted his advice and reached home in safety. —The Couucil Bluff Nonpariel has the following: Official —Married at the residence of Mr. Ben. Jarvis, iu Marshalltown, lowa, by the Rev. Mr. Willey, Joe Bough (that’s ns) and Miss Mary C. Swanson (that’s more of us). IIORSE SHOEING. pATRICK SHARKEY, HORSE SHOER AND BLACKSMITHING GENERALLY.
